Sugar & Spice: Age-Appropriate Costumes for Your Tween

When children are age 10 and under, Halloween is always a fun holiday. The very young children may dress up as a cuddly animal or a ball player and they are content to walk around their neighborhood with their parents to ensure safety. However, during the pre-teen years, children want independence. Additionally, they no longer want to wear costumes that are considered "babyish." They want to push the envelope with their costumes.

"High School Musical"
Your pre-teen daughter may want to show that she is not a baby on Halloween. She may want to dress up in provocative clothing and heavy makeup. You understand her feelings yet you don't approve of anything that pushes the envelope away from the bounds of decency. One compromise is to dress up like one of the characters in "High School Musical." The popular film series features characters who are recognizable and clean-cut, including Sharpay and Gabriella. These costumes should be good for parents and tweens.

Transformers
The Transformers movies have proved to be popular with teens and tweens. Autobot is one of the more popular dress-up characters and so is Deception. You can use makeup to accentuate this costume.

"Harry Potter"
The popular book and film series has a plethora of non-babyish characters and costumes for tweens. Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley are just a few of the characters that can be captured with Halloween costumes. Hogworts teachers can also be used for costume ideas.

Transformers? On a tween? The author is joking right? I'm assuming this article is directed at the parents of girls, since clearly "provocative" clothing and heavy makeup are not really a concern with tween boys. Transformers? On a tween girl! This is a poorly written article. My 9 and 11 year olds are out of the "baby" costume phase, and here are some better ideas:

    1) "glam" versions of "baby" costumes. For example, A witch can be cool (and modest) with the addition of jewelry, glitter makeup, and spiderweb decoration strewn onto the dress and hat. Check out this one: http://www.cheaphalloweencostumes.us/WITCH_Costume_p/r881011.htm

    2) Pirates are very trendy this year as well, and don't have to be "wench-y" In fact a boy's pirate costume on a girl can really look nice. Like this one: http://www.buycostumes.com/Pirate-Mate-Child-Costume/62690/ProductDetail.aspx

    3) My daughters are both in love with this Greek Goddess costume: http://www.costumeexpress.com/Greek-Goddess-Child-Costume/62787/ProductDetail.aspx , and you can even call it a "300 queen costume" if you like. many historical costumes are more grown-up, but not revealing.

My son was Harry Potter when he was 4. This year he is 9, and has chosen to be the grim reaper. I don't really have a problem with it. He knows it isn't real.

I don't understand the point of this article (except wanting modest choices for young girls).
