Summer Survival: Backyard movie night

I've been searching for photos use on the topic of "outdoor movie night" for days and lo and behold, Asha Dornfest over at Parent Hacks posted one today (thanks Asha!). Her topic is slightly different (family camping) but that's okay. I can work with it.

For a spin on a summer movie nights, take the big screen outdoors for a night. Whether it's just for your kids or group of their friends, they'll dig catching a flick under the star.

First things first. And this is probably the toughest part. You'll need a projector. And no, they are not cheap. The easiest thing to do is check out audio rental companies in your area where you can rent a projector for a night or weekend at a reasonable cost. I've called a few places in my hood that rent them for US$99 for the weekend. I'm certain you can get one for less. Make sure you tell them you need a basic projector for a backyard movie night. No bells and whistle. You can get one that just hooks up to your laptop and speakers or you can get one that has a built-in DVD player with sound. Either will work, go for what fits your budget. (If you are in the marketg for a projector for family movie night, check out TechMamas post on her picks.)

Okay, next up...the screen. You can play movies from a projector onto an outdoor wall of your home. You can also create a makeshift screen by attach a large piece of white canvas or a sheet to your house. And if you want to get really fancy, you can make a screen like the one in the above photo by following directions posted at Parent Hacks.

The rest is easy. Have the kids help you select an age-appropriate movie and some snacks. If you do it after grilling up dinner, you can make s'mores (my personal favorite). Be you must have popcorn and hot chocolate. Those are backyard movie night essentials. As for seating, a mix of sleeping bags, throw blankets (to sit on and to cover up with) and chairs work well.

We've been doing outdoor movie night for the last few years! The kids love it! We also show movies right up until the snow flies!!!! In the colder months - the movie starts around 4pm!!! We all bundle up start a fire in the pit and drink hot chocolate, eat hot dogs and have a wonderful time!! My children are 4 and 6! Last friday night we had 35 people in the backyard watching Open Season!

    Fantastic post!

    Growing up spoiled by accident-

I used to go to this drive-in movie place in the Hamptons.

They closed it down eons ago but the memories linger.

I think I saw Porky's or Grease there.

I also went to an outdoor venue in Budapest, Hungary.

I saw the first Terminator movie there-

    Arnold dubbed in Hungarian-stifling.

It was however, despite the acoustics-

very romantic to snuggle under the stars with my "translator"

    and a blanket.

    (sigh)

    Mmmm...Its funny cuz-

My beautiful partner and I probably wouldnt have made it through

the opening credits much less actually watch something

    other than each other lol.

    Love is...ridiculous isnt it.

We make it up as we go along (ahem)

you know how trifling that can be.

    Anyway great post and thanks.

PS: The great Jim McKay sadly passed-

something should be said here about his place in journalism

and in all of our lives.

He described everything he saw from his advantage and

pointed the way for us to examine, realize, and reflect.

    His description-

A what it meant to us or how the events that unfolded-meant to us

    was sheer real genius.

He invited us to sit and watch the spectacle on Sundays

    and he was simply-spectacular.

No matter the sport, the athlete, the stage-

he gave us his tireless precious majestic gift.

    Thanks Jimmy McKay.

We went to backyard movie night party on Friday, and it was terrific. More than 200 kids of all ages and parents, "National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets" and lots of popcorn. The weather was perfect -- it was a really fun night. It's the closest my kids have come to a drive-in -- only better.

Wow that sounds like a blast. hehe I can't do things like that 'cause I'm in an apartment complex so I have no yard but when I do some day I'll definitely remember that. What other ideas do y'all have for summer time for moms and kids?

I took my son to the pet shop last night so he could see all the animals and we had a good time.

Great timing, I am just about to actually buy a projector and try it out in my playroom. Thanks for the post!

What a great idea!!! Here in Alaska though when it's warm it is to light out and vice versa once it's dark enough for a movie in the yard. *lol* What memories of growing up when my parents would play old silent movies on our apartment courtyard wall for all the neighbors. :)
