Summer Survival Trick of the Day: Index card mashup art

In need of inspiration for quick summer activity for the kids? Scrumdilly-do! has a "boredom buster" for the day (which I picked as our summer survival pick for today): index card mashups.

And you have to love any activity that only involves index cards and markers, crayons or colored pencils.

The basic idea is for kids to create three or different sets of cards with different features: head, torso and legs/feet. The can mix and match them to create funny and freaky characters. Think of them as homemade Fashion Plates, only of space aliens, robots or dolls. Whatever your kid digs.

This activity is probably best for toddlers through young tweens. Younger kids will need some help drawing and the older kids will likely have some pretty intricate designs.

When you're done, pack them away and keep them in your purse in case you ever need a quick distraction/boredom buster for your kids while you're out and about.

And if you try this trick out, write about it. Did it work?

Another good one: Flip books. Kids draw each segment of an action, such as a ball bouncing or a person smiling, on separate cards. Then you staple them together, and they flip the pages to make their own "movie."
