Taking antidepressants while pregnant: is it safe?

Antidepressants make you feel a whole lot better, but you're pregnant so now what? Should you continue to take your medication or should you flush it down the toilet pronto.? Surprisingly, until last week, there were no guidelines to help pregnant women—and their doctors—make that that decision.

Last Friday, the guidelines were published in two medical journals: Obstetrics and Gynecology (a publication of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology) and General Hospital Psychiatry (a publication of the American Psychiatric Association).

The gist: Medical experts believe that untreated depression in pregnant women can be harmful not only to the mother, but to her baby and the risk of harm needs to be balanced against the risk of drugs to the developing fetus. So for mothers-to-be who suffer from disabling depression, bipolar disorder, or psychosis, the benefits of antidepressants are likely to outweigh the possible risks to the fetus.

The guidelines take into account the risks that the antidepressants pose to babies before and after birth as well as the impact a seriously depressed mother can have on her baby before and after birth—and well into childhood.

The experts recommend that women with milder forms of depression be weaned from their medication (before getting pregnant if possible) and also try psychotherapy.

The bottom line: If you are taking medication for depression, talk to your doctor before you continue or stop taking antidepressants. She'll be able to interpret the new guidelines and come up with a plan that works for you—and your baby.

Are you—or were you—on antidepressants? What made you decide to keep or stop taking them while pregnant?

I was on Effexor, Lexapro, Litium. I wasn't pregnant at that time, but speaking from expirence and the negative, sickly way they affected my body, I would say DO NOT TAKE THEM IF PREGNANT!! I was constantly physically ill, throwing up, dizzy, SEVERE mood issues, etc.. They made my depression worse-to the point that I was suicidal. My therapist was a quack to put it lightly! I quit cold turkey (which I don't recommend) I had withdrawls like an addict. I'm much happier and in a whole different place mentally than I was 3 yrs. ago. They may work for some people, but NOT for me! Great post!

I was also on Effexor before I was pregnant. My doctor suggested weaning off it before we tried to get pregnant, so I did. While i am still not pregnant almost a year later, I am glad that I was not on them while being pregnant. I had quite a few problems within the first 2 months. I could not imagine trying to be pregnant and dealing with withdrawl symptoms. But at the same time, I was only on Effexor for less than a year. So I think if it is something that you absolutely need to take to survive and be a contributing member of society, then by all means keep taking them. But always keep your doctor informed as what to what you are planning.

I have gone on and off a low dosage of zoloft for several years to deal with anxiety attacks. I was on it when I became pregnant. My doctor told me to stay on it. Just as the study above listed, he said it was far worse to have anxiety attacks while pregnant. He even said I may need to up my dosage further along in my pregnancy as my size increases. I am now 8 months pregnant and I haven't had any problems or complications. I feel great and my dosage hasn't changed.

I was on meds when I got pregnant. And the doc said it was fine. But I weaned myself off of them anyway. I was ok during the pregnancy. But afterwards went into a sever long lasting depression afterwards. So I had to get back on the meds to get back to normal.

I was on lexapro during my pregnancy. I did lower the amount taken but the side effects of going off of them and the mood changes when I tried to go off were severe. My son is 5 months old happy and healthy.
