The Trouble with Single-Dose Vaccines

Some green-leaning parents who are concerned about effects of vaccines, but convinced enough of their safety by current science that they do not want to forgo them altogether, take other, much less drastic measures. They stretch the timeline of when the shots are given, so their children are a bit older for the brunt of them. And they split up the MMR (measles mumps and rubella) vaccine into three single-dose shots instead of giving all three at once.

vaccinesBut on parenting boards across the internet, there has been a bit of a panic lately as families who have gone the split-them-up route are finding themselves two/thirds done with no sign of the third dose available anytime soon. In the New York area, I'm hearing, the rubella component is on backorder at many pediatricians' offices and in neighboring pharmacies known previously to carry it. This comes at a time when schools are asking for forms proving students are up to date with their vaccinations. This creates quite a conundrum.

Parents are now facing the possibility of having to give their child the combined shot they worked to avoid, on top of the two individual dose shots they've already administered, in order to be up to date. Needless to say they're not pleased. Which might be why rumors are running rampant that the (big bad!) pharmaceutical companies are purposely not releasing individual doses as a way to combat demand for them. It's also, parents surmise, a way to counteract concern over the triple dose vaccine.

As many people who have emailed me with vaccine questions over the years have noticed, Deirdre and I didn't weigh in on vaccines in The Complete Organic Pregnancy. We felt strongly that concerned families should read the most up to date research and make the decisions that are right for them. But when a nurse friend told me her Merck rep said the single doses soon won't be produced any longer, hence the current backlog in the rubella doses, I felt compelled to contact Merck & Co myself to set the record straight.

Here's the response I got from Nalini Saligram Merck's Director, Global Communications re whether or not they're discontinuing the single dose shots, thereby making it impossible for parents who want to split up the vaccines:

"As you know, our trivalent combination measles, mumps and rubella vaccine (M-M-R II vaccine) is widely recommended and widely used in the US. In the US, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and other policy makers recommend the use of combination M-M-R vaccine to help protect against all three diseases - measles, mumps and rubella. Merck has prioritized the production of M-M-R II, and is committed to meeting the medical need for vaccination against measles, mumps, and rubella by providing M-M-R II in adequate supply to meet demand. M-M-R II has been administered to millions of infants worldwide (over 500 million doses distributed to date)and has a well established safety and efficacy profile. We also make very limited quantities of the monovalent vaccines available in the US."
As for the current rubella backlog, she says, "Because quantities are limited, there may be supply interruptions / unavailability of individual products from time to time. We do provide M-M-R II vaccine to meet the needs for vaccination against measles, mumps and rubella."

This doesn't speak to exactly how limited the quantities are, or if they're more limited than they used to be. But apparently they have not been discontinued for now. If you haven't already begun spacing them out, ask your pediatrician to make sure all three doses will be available in a timely fashion. Still, if you want and need to have your child vaccinated for all three in time for school, the triple sounds like the only sure thing for now.

I have never broken up my children's vaccines. If they were scheduled to get them at a certain time, then I went ahead and did it. The only time they would get broken up would be if they were late; I really didn't think they could break them down like that.

Am I the only mom in America that is not worried about the vaccine situation? All of this talk about them makes me feel like I am failing my kids. I am the mother of 5 children, the youngest of which is a year old. I have to admit that with my oldest, now nine, I was the typical worried first time mom and read everything I could get my hands on about the vaccines she was being given. I have had no problems with any of my children from a vaccine except the typical pain and low grade fever. Should I be more concerned than this, especially since my baby is in the midst of her vaccines?

By the time they turn 18 months old, a child would have received 25 vaccines, plus about 10 more to follow until they turn 3 years old.

Why???? Why do we expect a baby's immature kidneys, livers, brains, etc., to process all of these toxins, preservatives, and dead/live bacteria and viruses? It's absolutely insane. And then give them a flu shot on top of all that every year, which still contains mercury (thimerosal).

If a baby is healthy and has no congenital diseases and no immune problems, I think the parents should wait on the vaccinations for at least 3 years and then start them. There is no reason to load these little babies up with all of this crap, while keeping them coddled in the house with everything around them being disinfected every 30 seconds.

There are doctors in this country who, thank God, are re-examining the safety of all these immunizations on a tiny human's developing system, instead of blindly taking the American Academy of Pediatrics' and CDC's broad statement that they are safe. Of course some children can process these toxins more efficiently than others, that is why the general assumption is that they are safe. But everyone must look a little more closely. If you have a family history of autoimmune disorders (allergies, asthma, eczema, certain thryroid diseases, to name a few) your child may be susceptible to vaccine injury. I am not a doctor, I have simply researched (for months) and found out that some, obviously less publicized, doctors are trying to get these establishments to at least have newborn testing (for mitochondrial disorders, for one) BEFORE they pummel the system with toxins. (some of which are unnecessary, such as hepB and varicella).

I don't understand why "an organic mom", as you call yourself, would, I assume, protect your children from environmental toxins, but not be concerned about what is being injected into them. I am making this supposition based on your remark about the "big, bad" pharma co's. Do you really think that they have you best interests at heart?

When I have kids I will not vaccinate them, there is little need for it if you teach and stress hand washing and a clean home. It's the kids, adults and and medical folks that don't do proper hand washing that cause and spread germs and super bugs. Just say no to vaccines and go all natural. Every time I was given a flu shot I got sick flu season, with out one I've been flu free for years.

There are so many kids that get vaccinations and they're perfect. We only hear about the very few kids that there's an issue with. The benefits far outweigh the side effects.

Well, I have two young kids (one and two) and we decieded to get most of the vaccinations, the ones we did not want were the flu, Hep A, HepB. But there was some miscomunication between us and the doc. and both got Hep B. Though I do not want them to get the other two. The flu is a stupid one I have heard rummors about it not even working...

PLEASE!!! VACCINATE YOUR CHILDREN!!! If you are one of the many scared parents out there that has bought into the unscientific mumbo-jumbo, please do yourself and society a favor and really find out, from ACTUAL DOCTORS what the vaccines do. There are huge numbers of distinct populations (the northwest US, or the UK, for example) that have parents who have chosen not to vaccinate based on hearsay and conspiracy theories, and children (even some of the vaccinated ones!) are being checked into the hospital in record amounts due to avoidable illnesses. DO NOT BELIEVE SCARY RUMORS THAT CIRCULATE ON THE INTERNET!!! And for the doubters, even doctors and pharmeceutical employees vaccinate their children. It's not a conspiracy.

Anyone who wishes not to give their children vaccines should read this book: "A Shot in the Dark" by Harris L. Coulter and Barbara Loe Fisher. Also, check out the National Vaccine Information Center at this website: http://www.nvic.org/ Here you will learn exactly why and will be able to respond to the intense questioning you will probably receive when you tell people you have decided not to vaccinate.

Thank goodness we still live in a free country where the government doesn't force you to inject things into your body (or your child's). Let's just hope it stays that way.
