What's the worst Mother's Day gift you've ever received?

Moms have different ideas about what we want to do and what we'd like to receive on Mother's Day. Some of us would just be content to not lift a finger all day. Others would be thrilled to receive a nice trinket. (Need an idea? Check out our picks at Shine!)

But let's face it. There comes a time in every mom's life where you receive a stinker of a Mother's Day gift. Where you smile politely on the outside but your innards are slightly churning with a mix of bitterness and amazement that someone would even consider such a gift.

Like Nataly Kogan from Work-it, Mom! who told me that one Mother's Day her boss gave her a guest pass to his fancy gym. Says Nataly, "One, a boss should not be giving me gifts on Mother's Daay and two, a guest pass I can use once so I can drool over this amazing gym  for the rest of my life? I don't think so."

And yes, her boss was male.

Or what about to just enjoy the goodness of being a mom to cute little kids? No such luck for Heather Flett of the blog Rookie Moms. "Last year, I had a two month old and a two year old so all I wanted was the "fun" parts of mothering: playing, cuddling, and silliness without any of the tantrums and poopy diapers. Guess what I got? That's right, tantrums and poopy diapers. There's always this year!"

What's the worst Mother's Day gift you've ever received? And if you can remember back, what's the worst gift you've given a mom?

I've heard that "she's not my mom" bit from the dad of my kids before, and it hurts! Who made me a mom anyway?

    Guys - don't do that!!!

My husband got me a new front loading washing machine this year. And he told me that I'd now be responsible for doing all the household laundry. I laughed at him.

My dad got my mom a garden hoe with a pink bow on it one year. Where do we find these geniuses??

I got an "old ladies'" purse one year; you know, the kind that looks like plastic patchwork. I wrapped it up and told my husband to give it to his mother, which he did.

I gave mine a divorce so she doesn't have to worry about what she'll not be getting in the future for this fake holiday created by Hallmark.

My very first Mother's Day as a mother (our daughter was 4-weeks old) I was expecting flowers or perhaps a piece of jewelry to commemorate the occassion. My husband went to the local hardware store, picked out a plastic laundry basket, and put a great deal of thought into filling it with things such as a heavy-duty manual can opener, a strainer, a meat thermometer, a spatula, new dish towels, etc. I don't know what I epected when I saw this large package, but certainly not that. I burst into tears. He was complete baffled and couldn't understand why I wouldn't want something to make my life easier while taking care of him. Yes, we are still married. He has never made thaht mistake again!

Many years ago when my sons were in their 20's, they each went to their friends homes for Mothers Day cookout and picnics. My husband took me to a fast food place to eat. I cried all day. I got my revenge come birthdays the following months 2 birthdays in June and 1 in July. I just plain forgot about them and they got the message, I've gotten nice gifts since. Never forget your Mom or she will forget you!!!!

A card and flower left on my doorstep from my daughter's father. I left him when my daughter was a month old (just two months prior to Mother's Day-my daughter is 9 now). The card played "You are my sunshine". I found it the other day while cleaning and in the trash it went! As a matter of fact, the battery was low when I first got it, so the song played funny. I had no use for him then, and have even less use for him now-but at least the doorstep gifts stopped.

About 12 years ago, my son (now 18) was 6 years old and for the first time ever, he took his own money and went to buy me a Mother's Day card. His Dad let him pick it out and pay for it himself. To my surprise when I opened the envelope, it was a Sympathy card. I was so proud and shocked at the same time. (Not at all my worst gift, I still have that precious card).

But the worst gift was the same year when my husband had a gift (beautifully wrapped) waiting for me. When I opened it I found a pair of shorts (very short) that would never fit my sizable butt and a NASCAR t-shirt at least 3 sizes too big. I returned the shorts but my husband had decided that the t-shirt was a perfect fit for him. He really liked it too. HUM!!
