Would you let your child name your baby?

Trying to come up with a baby name? My friend's parents let her older sister name her. Her sister, then six, chose the name Mary Magdalene. My friend hates it, and goes by the nickname Maggie. She's always blamed her sister.

It turns out that many parents let their children name their new sibling.

According to an article in the Toldedo Blade, Marilyn Stevenson of Michigan was named by her older brother. "My parents had seven children, six girls and one boy. My brother was the second born and became very frustrated when one sister after another joined the family. When my parents announced another pregnancy, they told my brother that he could name the baby. I was born when he was 9 years old. He had a boyhood crush on a girl named Marilyn and decided that would be a good name for me."

When Cheryl Brockman was 8 years old, her parents told her that she could name her new sister. She chose "Queen Elizabeth," for the recently crowned Queen Elizabeth II, and "Liberace," for the entertainer. Her mother later told Cheryl hat it was the most miserable pregnancy of her life because she knew if it was a boy she wouldn’t be able to name him Liberace, and that it would break Cheryl’s heart. Fortunately, the baby was a girl and they dropped the "Queen" and simply named her Elizabeth. Cheryl was so proud of the role she had in naming her sister.

Did you let one of your other children name your new baby? Would you consider the idea?
Did you name or were you named by one of your siblings?

best idea to get older siblings involved. relieves tension of "who is this in MY house with MY parents" have them come up with a few options or ones you like and have them choose.

I don't think that I would ever let an older child name my younger one. Knowing my luck the older sibling would want to name the baby something crazy like Crayon or Spongebob. Besides, if the kid hates their name they wont blame the sibling.

My parents asked us for suggestions for baby names when my mother was expecting my younger sister. They then promised to think about all the names and decide which one was best. I suggested two names, Amy and Katelyn because that's what I always named my Barbie dolls. I was thrilled when my mother chose to name my sister Katelyn Amy. It really validated my roll in the family and showed that my parents respected me.

With my last one, I asked my older two to help with a name. We went through a lot of names. We each would have an idea, then they all got vetoed. lol. In the end just like their names, this little one knew what her name was meant to be. And I named her while in labor. The first two were named as they were born.

My bestfriends sister let her older son at the age of 4 name her soon to be son. He loved Thomas the train so he chose the name connor.

I dont think siblings should choose the babies name because it can cause tension later.

Lol, this reminds me of the story my friend told me of her parents putting everyone's name in a hat too see who would get to name their last baby (their fifth daughter). The one who won the naming rights was their 4 year old who wanted to name the baby Big Bird She-ra. It took four months to convince her to change her mind and she finally settled on Carrie.

I named my younger sister. I was 8 when she was born and I suggested the name Audrey after my 2nd grade teacher ( at 8 i was unaware of the famous Hepburn). My parents both agreed it was lovely and I think it fits her quite well!

I was 7 when my parents let me pick out my baby sister's name, and her name is Abigail Christine Schmidt. She gets compliments on her name all the time :D

We are expecting a new baby, and when I asked my daughter's input, she said we should name it "Poo Baby." I love 2-year-olds!!!
