You Shall Pee In The Potty!

Well, It is that time for me to start potty-training my son.  I will freely admit that I was an utter failure at training my daughter and it was only after I sent her to my mother-in-law's house that she finally started using the potty regularly.  And now I find myself in the precarious position of teaching a small boy how to pee using equipment that I don't own and am unsure how it works. Do I push "it" down between his legs? do I let him stand?  With my daughter I read her a book, we talked about it and she got the idea.  My son is different and I'm not sure that would work.

So, blogosphere I plead for your assistance.  Any tips on training a 21/2 year old boy how to use the potty? I'm eternally grateful.

Put a fish decal like the ones you would put in the bath tub to keep from slipping in the toilet and tell him to aim for it or you can use a peace of toilet paper and have him aim for that.

Cheerios work too. Put a few in the bowl and let him have target practice. Also, "magic water". The cleaners that turn the bowl water blue will turn green when he tinkles. Good luck!!!

Cherrios/or fruit loops, keeps him interested in aiming into the toilet.

Also, with my son, (who was much lazier) than my daughter when it came to potty training, I made a sticker poster and placed it along side of the toilet, every time he made it into the potty, I would give him a yellow sticker, or smiley face..after the board was filled up, we would head to Toys R US..really motivated him to do good..also, let him wear his wet sloppy underwear(not pullups) for a few minutes after he has an accident, soon enough he will detest the wet feel between his legs..at least until he becomes a teenager..lol

I have been working on potty training my son too. We started with him sitting but he didnt like it and started to stand all on his own. i think that standing is better because that is what they wil be doing when they get older. why retrain them when they can allready do it. just get a stool for the bathroom and he will love it. We use a potty chart that we set up next to the toilet. Every time he goes potty we give him a star, when he gets enough stars he gets a speical surprise that is potty realted. We have given him potty book and new big boy undies. Boys are harder to get to go to the bathroom then girls. And all kids are diffrent. Use what works for yours. good luck

Know before hand: "Potty Training DOES NOT happen in a weekend, a week or even a month with boys". I'm also potty training my 2.4 month old son. A few things that have worked for us: NEVER ask "Do you have to go potty?" They'll always answer NO. Give a friendly reminder that "we're trying to keep our pants dry and clean". We also have a few hours of our day, during the 1st and 2nd week, (SAHM) where he goes bottom less and races to the potty just before he has an accident. Don't use pull ups. Kids think they're diapers. Prepare for accidents and don't take it personally when he has an accident. We're still working through the process as well. Good Luck to you and your family.

i let my 21/2yr old son run around bottomless or in undies and i remind him often that "peepee goes in the potty, not on the floor or undies" when he needs to go he says "potty". now he is beginning to show interest and tell me when he has to go when he is wearing diapers. he will not go poopoo on the potty and insists on wearing a diaper to do the job!!!! small steps but all big milestones and we are just being very patient. i found it very helpful to have potty parties!! when i go he goes!!
