Could you handle a day without the gays?
editor
In celebration of International Human Rights Day on December 10th
and in reaction to anti-gay ballot initiatives in California,
Arizona and Florida,
DayWithoutAGay.org has come up
with a brilliant way to peaceably fight the opposition. The gay
community is asking for supporters not to call in sick, but to
"call in gay" in order to take the day off from work to
volunteer time with various organizations that promote equality.
(For those who fear getting fired, there are other ways to
get involved.) Oh and you don't have to be gay to call in,
duh. Given the huge organizing success of
Join the Impact and the nationwide
protests this past Saturday, we wonder how many people will
actually call in and say, "Can't work, I'm too gay
today."

If I called in "gay" my boss would be confused .... then he would be angry. This tactic may play out successfully in cities with large gay communities, but it would not be looked upon kindly where I live (and I live just outside of NYC in the 'burbs, not exactly the backwoods !) I think employers will view the action antagonistically, getting people who support gay rights into trouble (reprimand or disciplinary action, fodder for a bad review?) with their employers. A worthwhile price to pay for a gesture? Then again, what is a cultural revolution (think the civil rights movement) but a strung together series of gestures, creating a (tidal-wave) movement ?

This is idiotic.... when I can call in straight, childless or over 40?
Who you decide to have sex with should NOT determine what you can get away with.

I think we as a country, have MUCH bigger problems right now.Straight married male, getting kinda tired of the pissiin and moaning.Your gay, that's cool but let's worry about putting food on our tables and teaching our kids to be smarter than the dummies on wall st.
Then we can worry about gay sick days, seriously

Well, perhaps it isn't really that one doesn't have to literally call out or request a day off from work with the explanation that you are gay or it's gay day. How about arrange to use PTO, Vacation, etc because it is International Human Rights Day, and definitely if one is able, be of service that day.
It's a noble idea, I'm glad you shared.

This is a joke, right?! If one of my employees called in "gay", I would laugh. Not really. I would tell them I don't give a damn what they're sexual preference is, nor do I care. That has nothing to do with why I hired them, and it will not be tolerated as an excuse to take off work while my "straight" workers are here! It's called an excuse. Do it on the weekend like everyone else.
