Could you handle a day without the gays?

In celebration of International Human Rights Day on December 10th and in reaction to anti-gay ballot initiatives in California, Arizona and Florida, DayWithoutAGay.org has come up with a brilliant way to peaceably fight the opposition. The gay community is asking for supporters not to call in sick, but to "call in gay" in order to take the day off from work to volunteer time with various organizations that promote equality. (For those who fear getting fired, there are other ways to get involved.) Oh and you don't have to be gay to call in, duh. Given the huge organizing success of Join the Impact and the nationwide protests this past Saturday, we wonder how many people will actually call in and say, "Can't work, I'm too gay today."

Seems like a great way to get fired... calling in sick [or gay] just to get out of work... umm... no!

If straight people were being discriminated against the same way that gay people are being discriminated against, these comments would be MUCH different.

If straight, Christians were suddenly told that Christian marriages would no longer be recognized because they violate the separation of church and state, GUARANTEED, Christians would be calling off work "Christian and married" for WEEKS to support their cause.

Well, to the haters who commented about why we don't have an "I'm Straight" day... these are probably the same kind of people who think that homosexuality is "sick"... so calling in "gay" is kinda clever, IMHO... gay people might "get over" themselves when they're given equal rights.

The gays are screwing it up for all their kind. With all the protests, church raids, etc. It makes them look bad. People don't like that, even other peaceful gays. You are hurting yourselves

The gay people who have posted negative things about"straight" people need a reality check,I'm sorry you may not feel equal,I'm straight, married, male and white,I have fewer rights than you could possibly imagine, try getting a good job as a cop or firefighter, try getting help through tough finacial times like food assistance,If I had a different ethnic back ground,No problem!

Be happy,be gay and please stop your complaining, maybe people voted against the gay marriage thing simply cause they are just really focused on issues that affect there familys right now.

you people are missing the point. it's not about being gay as a choice or being able to call in straight. this is a strike, a protest, it's about making a statement. this was born out of the film, "a day without mexicans," and the point is to show the country how many of us are GLBT or support that community.

and the message also says that if you don't want to "call in gay," simply take the day off or help out another way.

Nobody is missing the point, maybe some people don't really care if you white, mexican, gay or straight, and maybe just maybe the world might get a little better if we all stopped putting labels on our selves,My mother is from Canada,My dad is from Portugal,I'm a reformed drug user,I have a lazy eye,SO WHAT!!!!!

THE POINT IS MOST PEOPLE THAT I KNOW,INCLUDING SOME VERY CLOSE GAY FRIENDS ARE JUST TIRED OF ALL THE COMPLAINTS.

I'm sorry Iv'e been laid off for 8 months and get up every day and do my thing and I don't need to blame anyone or complain, maybe all the gay and straight employers will fire all the call in "sick"make a statement people and then some of us can get back to work.

Be greatful for the life you live and don't complain about the life you think you deserve!!!!!!!!

That's cool just don't expect everyone to believe in what you believe in.Be gay, call in, just stop pushing your belief or lifestyle down our throat(no pun intened to the gay men) Do you enjoy someone knocking on your door at dinner time and trying to sell you into their church?

I step up every day for the things that ME and my Family feel are important to us.

    Thank you.

this isn't about your straightness. this is about making a statement for one group. one. I can understand not wanting to put labels. labels can be diminutive. but, don't tell us to appreciate the lives we have when we face blatant discrimination daily. this is our political right and I think it's beuatiful that we are using the system to its advantages.

why don't you call me when you are discriminated against for your heterosexuality, when your parents disown you for choosing to be straight, when your religious marriage is no longer is no longer recognized by the government, when you are accused of forcing your straight lifestyle on the rest of us, when you get calls from parents demanding that you stop parading your straight lifestyle and sexuality in front of their children.
