Do or Don't: Joint Bank Accounts

The couple in happier days

The couple in happier days

For someone who claims to be sick of all the Jon and Kate Gosselin drama, I sure write about them a lot! I just can't help it though...they always have something crazy going on. Did you see the newest scandal? Jon allegedly withdrew $200,000 from his and Kate's joint bank account without her knowing, leaving only $1,000 in the account.

According to the story, Kate only learned about the withdrawal after she received overdraft notices. When she called the bank to ask about her joint account, they told her that Jon had removed $200,000. I'm surprised she doesn't check the account online more often especially because of her marital situation.

Drew and I have a joint account, and I don't check it as often as I should. I trust him with everything, especially our finances, but I get frustrated when he questions me about purchases because I never do that to him. He says he wants to follow up about random charges which he thinks could be fraudulent, but I joke with him that I know he just wants to make sure I'm not buying anything frivolous. As much as I trust him though, I know I should be checking our account more often. When I had my own account, I checked it obsessively, but now I'm lazier about it because I know he looks at it multiple times during the day.

If you and your guy have a joint bank account, how often do you check on it? Are you lazier about it since you know he checks it frequently? Have you ever questioned any of his purchases or withdrawals? And does he check up on you?

P.S. Do you and your man share a bank account? What do you go without when your bank account gets low? And who makes more money: you or your man?

my boyfriend and I have seperate accounts. Since he pays the bills, I write him a check every payday for our 'common' bills (ie. rent, elect, water ect...) and we each take care of our own bills (ie. car, insurance, cell phone ect...). It works out great for us.

Joint bank accounts are a recipe for trouble. Someone alway messes up the money flow sooner or later.

I think it depends on the type of situation and the people involved. If one person is going to be taking care of the bills and handling the money in a relationship/marriage, I think there's nothing wrong with a joint account. A joint account simply means running big purchases past your significant other before doing any spending. I think that regardless of having a joint or separate accounts, big purchases/finances should be discussed within a relationship anyway. I think a joint account is better so that there is no tally of whose money a couple has been using more.

My hubby is bad with money (his own admission), so I control over joint account. He is able to look in anytime. We always consult each other about purchases. I works for us but it is not for everyone.

I think is all about thrust, if you don't thrust each other with each other's money. Then since the begining of the relationship this should be simple each person should pay there own billls.

My fiance and I just opened a join account when we started receiving engagement gifts in the form of checks. We both have our own personal accounts, too, but once we are married and living together we plan to use the join account for shared bills like rent, electricity, and groceries. We will decide how much we need to have in that account each month and contribute equally to it each month. The rest of what we earn will be kept separately.

This works pretty well as long as we are earning about the same amount. Once he's out of school (in about 6 years) he'll be out-earning me by quite a bit, so we will have to re-evaluate our money situation at that time.

My fiance and I have seperate accounts. We pay our own bills and we split rent (he pays cable, internet and electricity b/c he makes a lot more.) Once we are married we plan on opening a joint savings account and both contributing an equal amount to it but we still plan on keeping our own checking and savings accounts.

One of the main arguements between couples is money. He has his money and I have mine. We never fight about money and it works great!

If you're not married, you have no need to share much of anything. Married couples are different.

But I don't believe this story anyway.

They make $50,000-$75,000 per episode, with TLC paying for many of their basic living expenses. Not to mention payment for personal appearances AND her books-- Where's all the money?
