Have sexual side effects ever made you give up a prescription drug?

"CDC: Antidepressants most prescribed drugs in U.S." Er, that's a recent highly um, depressing CNN headline. But it's no secret we're a nation of pillheads. Why, according to the article, 2.4 billion prescriptions were written in 2005 alone, and that's before an even higher percentage of Big Pharma advertising started not only appealing to doctors, but began occurring on TV, in magazines and other media more than ever before, beckoning us all to conveniently "ask our doctors" to fix problems we didn't even realize we had until now. But there's another problem that all this medication has presented, and all it takes is the proliferation of women dishing (not to mention Viagra advertisements), to realize that sexual side effects are a whole other side show being created by our voracious need for pills.

Here's the crazy thing: Most women will tell you that they've experienced decreased libido and anorgasmia (failure to achieve orgasm)--not to mention the fun Ambien-related sleep sex debacles--but look at the accompanying literature on most pharmaceuticals and it seems to be skewed towards males in terms of describing ejaculatory failure and erectile dysfunction. Of course, it's not shocking to discover that medical studies are geared towards men and not women. That's been going on for some time now.

Still, have the sexual side effects of a drug ever convinced you to discontinue use?

Yes. I pretty much told my doctor to take me off Zoloft when it was affecting my mojo. Even by myself, I couldn't orgasm, and that was really really really frustrating. Fortunately, he decided it was time to wean me off it anyways!

I had serious side effects from birth control. I started off on Depo Provera but had a huge decrease in libido as well as vaginal dryness problems, and other problems that included more weight gain than what was expected. I switched to pills which helped a little but it still affected my libido. I decided to go to just condoms since we were in a long term relationship and after a few years my body finally went back to it's normal state.

I have been on several different meds in the past several yrs. some effecting orgasm, some even enhancing them, god only knows how. Overall, my current meds are ok, i can function, not being a zombie. And even have decent sex. I guess it is the luck of my own personal body chemistry.

As for discontinuing a med just for sex. no, It is better for me to not be suicidel then worry about an orgasm.

I was on birth control for a long time. It totally affected my sex drive, and on top of that, I did gain weight. I have been off the pill for about 8 months, my sex drive is back and I'm so happy about it!!! So is my husband! we use other methods for birth control. I have also lost weight and still losing since being off the pill.

I had this problem with Celexa. Could not orgasm to save my life! It was very frustrating!! I stopped taking it because of that and other side effects. Recently, I tried Cymbalta and it did the same thing, so I immediately stopped taking it.

On the birth control depo provera I lost my libido completly. I was like an unfeeling Barbi doll or something. You could touch me if you wanted to, but my body wouldn't notice. It was really frustrating! I got off "the shot" mainly for that reason, but there was also significant weight gain and mood swings. Otho evra "the patch" no drop in libio and weight loss actually.

I have never been able to orgasm since I became sexually active, or even by masturbation since I began taking my medication. I am almost to the point of being depressed and wanting to know what it feels like to achieve this.

I've never had an orgasm, so I can't say that was affected. But I did stop taking Lithium due to the lack of sexual desire. Sad, I lost all desire to have sex. Its all better now that I'm off of it. : )
