Is the anti-rape condom a good idea?

"RapeX is an anti-rape female condom invented by a South African woman named Sonette Ehlers. As a former employee with the South African Blood Transfusion Service, she treated many rape victims which served as her inspiration for creating this device. RapeX is a female condom that is inserted into the vagina much like a tampon. It is made of latex, like a normal condom, but it is lined with 'shafts of sharp, inward-facing barbs.' If a man attempts to rape a woman, once he penetrates the woman, the condom would attach itself to the penis and cause severe pain to the man during withdrawal. Ideally, once the man is writhing on the floor, the woman would have enough time to escape the scene. In addition, the perpetrator would be unable to remove the female condom from his penis; he would have to get it surgically removed which would be a tell-tale sign to authorities and help in legal prosecution."--
Anti-Rape Condom

In all honesty, before learning the statistics of rape and AIDS victims in South Africa, I would not have even believed this type of device existed, nor would I have seen any reason for it to exist; however, knowing the horrific conditions that exist over there, I would donate money to any woman who lived there and wanted to invest in this type of device. In the Frequently Asked Questions section of her website Ehlers advises that women wear RapeX if “you have to travel long distances alone, on a train, working late, going out on a date with someone you don’t know too well, going to clubs, or in any situation that you might not feel comfortable or even just not sure.”

Of course, a device like this is not without its critics. Lisa Vetten from the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation in South Africa states, “It is like we are going back to the days where women were forced to wear chastity belts. It is a terrifying thought that women are being made to adapt to rape by wearing these devices … Women would have to wear this every minute of their lives on the off-chance that they would be raped.” Ehlers responds, “As with everything in life there will be negative attitudes and I can’t be responsible for people who refuse to educate men and feel the device is medieval. A medieval device for a medieval deed!”

Callen I see it as a thing we can do to protect ourselves. Men should not rape women to begin with but I dont think that is going to stop over night so till than I think this is a good idea.

hey I think it is a great idea. My husband and I would buy one for our daughter. Rape is a serious offense and if this can help deter it, as well as painfully torture the man who tried to rape somone, more power to this device!!!! Rape charges are to lenient and it is hard to prove because people are getting smarter. At least this is a surefire way to catch the ass**** that did it and put him to justice!!!

Yup and the thing has to be surgically removed from them. I think they deserve to suffer and it also prevents from pregnancy and STD's in the case of rape.

Komodo you may say you don't support you rape but you obviously think it isn't that bad. If you knew what rape did to women you would think having spines in a rapist organ is too kind. I personally, would prefer the item if it not only stuck spikes into the man's organ but that snapped (tore??) the damn thing off PERMANENTLY.

    Rapists deserve nothing less.

He would not lose the ability if he seeks medical attention. But that will also mean that he would get caught for committing the rape. So a rapist who normally wouldnt get caught would be cuffed and put in jail after the doctor removes the spines.

    Komodo,

If a male were to rape somebody you loved, wouldn't you want her to be safe?

I agree Elle but if we cant do that we might as well hurt them a little bit and give ourselves a chance to run away.

Wow, this is a sad subject for both sexes and these medieval attitudes will only lead to more physical abuse. I think the idea of a thick permanent condom (25-30Day) insert is good idea to stop HIV and unwanted pregnancies. At least she lives and the guy does not kill her in anger. Then she can find her attackers with the evidence (hint) left behind.

I think it's pretty cool. Education only goes so far with sex offenders! Look on the national sex offender regestry and be amazed at how many sick pervs live in your neighborhood! I live halfway in the country and there are 7 who's houses I can walk by, and those are just the ones I know about!

Self defence classes are pretty cool too. I started training 15 years ago and I gaurantee any man would have a hard time with me now! Even Mr 300lb bench press. Is that on a machine or free weights?
