Maybe hourglass figures aren't as sexy as everyone claims

You may have heard about the importance of your waist-to-hip ratio and you've also probably heard that 0.7 is supposedly the magic number when it comes to male-to-female attraction. That was Marilyn Monroe's number. Jessica Alba is about 0.7 too. So is the Venus de Milo. And while scientific studies have suggested that the waist-to-hip ratio is a better determiner of health than BMI, new arguments are being made that 0.7 is not necessarily where it's at when it comes to men's hardwired sexual responses. Elizabeth Cashdan from the University of Utah argues that maybe a little squiggle in the middle isn't so bad after all.

"Cashdan's work addresses what has long been a huge flaw in the biology-of-beauty claims, namely that few women in any society (Victoria's Secret models do not constitute a "society") have that 0.7 ratio. They tend to be much higher, with a cylindrical rather than hourglass shape. Surely, given that evolution cares only about whether your traits enable you to leave offspring, there would have been tremendous selection pressure for women to have an hourglass shape if it truly conferred greater fertility. So what explains all these imperfect women? (In Cashdan's data from 33 non-Western and four European populations, the average waist-to-hip ratio is above 0.8.)

The explanation is that androgens increase fat around the waist, raising that ratio. But androgens also increase strength, stamina, and competitiveness. 'The hormonal profile associated with high [waist-to-hip ratio]. . . may favor success in resource competition, particularly under stressful circumstances,' writes Cashdan. 'The androgenic effects--stamina, initiative, risk-proneness, assertiveness, dominance--should be particularly useful where a woman must depend on her own resources to support herself and her family.'"(Source)

That logic is pretty sound, especially when you figure that the current idea of a nuclear family is not what evolution had in mind. In fact, when it came to procreation, neolithic man was more likely to make his deposit and then go all deadbeat daddy (or just dead daddy) before his progeny were old enough to defend themselves, which leaves mom swinging the club to defend the cave.

When I read about the whole magic waist-to-hip ratio during my undergrad anthropology courses, I had to immediately take my own measurements and do the math, and whaddya know, fat girls can be 0.7 too. I took my measurements again last night and yup, I've gained inches around my ass, so now I'm 0.73. Strangely, I feel like I'd still be lousy in a fight. (Sculpt sexy curves, pronto!)

Cashdan has a little more analysis on the subject when it comes to the availability of resources.
...Men may prefer this non-hourglass shape, despite claims to the contrary, in countries where women tend to be economically independent (Britain and Denmark). Only in countries where women are economically dependent on men (such as Japan, Greece and Portugal) do men prefer the thin-waist ideal of female beauty. In some non-Western societies where women bear the responsibility for finding food, men prefer larger waist-to-hip ratios. Cashdan puts it this way: "Whether men prefer a [ratio] associated with lower or higher androgen/estrogen ratios . . . should depend on the degree to which they want their mates to be strong, tough, economically successful and politically competitive." (Source)
Intriguing! This analysis supports my belief that we are intelligent creatures who have the ability to override our evolutionary programming, based on the availability of resources in the modern world. I'd like to believe that I personally have preferred a person's soul to their genetic build, but then I look at my linebacker-esque husband and every guy that I've ever seriously clicked with sexually and get the feeling that maybe this line of thought is a Pandora's box best left sealed.

This article is stupid as hell. HELLO, have you seen the paintings of Venus de Milo. She is a fat b---- with celulite! That was the artist conception of the Goddess of love. All men have different taste in how they want their women. They will say this or that about what they like, but when the lights go off, most men don't give a $hit!!

I'm kind of appalled at the comments here. Did you not read the news story this originates from? I mean, come on!

As for the one that said this needs to be edited, nearly every article I've read from the main Shine page, INCLUDING those by shine staff and professional article writers, contains one mistake or another. Even news stories these days seem to be full of misspellings and grammatical errors. It's the general degredation of the written word in the electronic age, I tell you!

Anyway, I have always been big, but I think I've always had an in between ratio.

By the way, that pic of Marilyn? Totally NSFW. You can see everything through that sheer scarf.

I must agree with Will E.-Marilyn Monroe was very round and very attractive. But not the version of what we have come to know as the perfectly shaped woman. That image is very distorted. The image that we as a society have projected to others and ourselves over the years is much too hard for "the rest of us" to live up to or to become. The "Victoria Secret Model" woman is very pleasing to the eye, but not what most women see in the mirror. Which makes some women have self esteem issues with themselves that can be very hard to overcome. As we know this also causes many health problems. Personally I like knowing that someone loves me and is attracted to me for who I am and not just because I am beautiful! (My measurements are 36-25-37) My husband loves my curves and yes-he likes to have something to hold on to!

Hey Will E, i have noticed that most of the articles on shine make no sense, are wildly contradictory to another article on shine or are so wildly egotistically that they are painful to have read.

Live healthy and love yourself . Most men seem to like the skinny women on T.V. and in the ads but are, I think , smart enough to know that those women are a small percentage and that most women don't look like that. Just like we know that most men don't look like those men in the Bod body spray commercials. To each their own but realize that no matter how you look always be clean and well groomed and do your best to live and be healthy.

I think guys like varitey and the woman that becomes their wife may have other qaulites that makes them over look the non-hourglass figure. Not to say that most guys don't find this attractive.I have found that when a woman with an hour glass figure walks by people in general just notice myself included.

For one thing, the image of the perfect woman changes with every generation. As women, we need to be happy with ourselves. In the middle ages, it was big women....really big women who where considered the most beautiful. In the 1920's they liked tall, thin women. In the 50's if you were not at lease a size 10, you were a skinny bird women who needed to eat. In the 70's came Twiggy so everyone thought they had to be skinny and blonde with no tits and no ass. Then came Jackee in the 80's and everyone wanted to have a full hourglass figure again. Now with all these Models and stars with figures like 10 year olds, they are trying to take our waistline from us. Everyone is supposed to be straight up and down. What bull s---!
