My so-called sex life: Women, we keep getting naked

Here’s what I really want to know: If our society has really taken a step forward for women, why do we keep insisting on taking our clothes off in photos for men? From Miley Cyrus, to Sarah Silverman half naked in a gorilla suit on the cover of Maxim, to practically any picture of Britney Spears, nudity sells.

If I was not sure of this concept when I started this column, I only have to look at the hits based solely on the title of my post. Stick the word “sex” in my title and I get more trolls than an Expedia.com commercial.

I’m not saying that nudity doesn’t sell, even porn for that matter. “Sex is a natural function!” many would argue. So is wanting to chow down on two dozen Oreos in one sitting. But I manage to not only control my urges, but I don’t need to watch 15 year olds lying about their age doing it on camera to enhance my eating pleasure. Just sayin’.

I suppose my even bigger question is that if it’s just so organic for women to get naked in front of a camera and moan with pleasure at some badly tanned fifty year old photographer cooing, “Make love to the lens” while he’s secretly dreaming of schtupping Carlos the assistant designer, why aren’t more men dropping trou?

When Jessica Simpson or Paris Hilton hump a car for residuals, are they really doing it just for the money? What about the reunion show they do at 45 where they convince themselves that they still look hot but the same photographer who shot the car commercial is selling photos to the Enquirer of their mid-life cellulite trauma?

Are women not allowed to age? Is our greatest hope to maintain perky breasts, get men off and then go to pasture pretending that's really what we planned all along? Meanwhile, at 45, those same women only have photos of their former selves, while men at 45 are hitting their prime and can go round two with women half their age.

This loop is nothing new. But if that’s the case, why are women still repeating it? Why in this naked demonstration against bull fighting in Spain , are the women sans clothes (barring a stringy bikini bottom) while the dudes’ men vegetables are covered in shorts? Are they afraid the bulls are hung more than they are?

For the record, I’m all for sex. I love that my husband gets schwing just looking at my breasts and would rather have sex with me than the 21 year old across the street. (Yeah, I know he's probably lying. But God love his loyalty.) But if my daughter ever posed like a cross between a Nightmare Before Christmas character and an Ashley twin with her hands over her non-existent breasts looking freaked out – like she just saw a Cheeseburger – I'd want to throw her in front of the Spanish cows. At last that bull crap is real.

I agree 100%. Unfortunately, women will continue to do this, and along with it, devalue ourselves. It seems that for every 1 successful, brainy, beautiful woman who insists men treat her like an equal, there are 100 women stripping in clubs, hooking on the streets, and otherwise baring their flesh. And then they have the gall to say "What does it matter, men will look no matter who's doing it. Why shouldn't I profit from it?"

While it would be nice to see things equal, I think I'd prefer that people stop taking their clothes off in front of the camera. Of course, I suppose that would depend on which guy it was. LOL!!!

What planet are you living on, and how naive can you possibly be? "If our society has really taken a step forward for women, why do we keep insisting on taking our clothes off in photos for men?" And ". . . why aren’t more men dropping trou?" And "Are they afraid the bulls are hung more than they are?"

First, let's get this newsflash out of the way: yes, we realize the bulls are hung "more" than we are. And no, no man in his right mind is "threatened" by that. (And you women think GUYS are juvenile? That was a woman who posited THAT inanity.) Ah, why are you afraid to show your breasts -- do the cows have bigger mammary glands than you? Let's grow up, shall we, and start talking reality.

Second, why do women show skin for men? Why don't men show skin much for women? Do you want the politically motivated women's studies class answer, which has no basis in scientific fact, or do you want the answer that every thinking person since pre-history has known is the truth?

Men and women are DIFFERENT. Men have an enhanced sex drives due to that dirty word "testosterone." Men are more visual when it comes to sex. Men are looking to ejaculate whenever possible and women generally have a desire to mate to produce offspring but this means women are more selective about mating. And, yes, women are able to use their sex appeal to control, snare, tease and use men -- if they want to. And guess what? None of this is a cultural constrict. It's the way it's been since the dawn of man, feminism or no. Get it? Ask ten people on the street and nine of the ten will get this right.

Now the real question is, how did someone who can write a sentence in an articulate fashion become so stupid about gender differences?

The best theory I've ever heard on this is that women do not dress, do our hair and wear high heels to impress men. We do it to impress other women. Let's face it: women are our worst enemy. We're catty and shameless and we will steal your man if we think we're better than you. No, that is not every woman and not every woman poses nearly nude for photographs but I think those women do it to show off what they've got to other women. We are our strongest competition and while I don't understand it, I can admit that when I get ready for a night out, I want to be the hottest girl there, not the girl getting all the guys...the girl that looks better than all the other girls. Weird, huh?

i think that thecarbolicsmokball is right women bare themselves to get the attention of man, and man don't have to because women respond better to a nice smile, beautiful eyes, than they do to a full display of a man's crotch.

Seeing the pictures got me thinking about PETA. I have noticed that almost all their campaigns have something to do with being naked (The Naked Truth, I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur, etc). And have you noticed that 90% of these campaigns feature naked women? The only one that I can think of was the Go Naked where they actually featured a bunch of naked men. But all the others show naked women in sexually provocative positions. So basically they are selling sex to make people more aware of animal abuse. Uh huh. I have issues with that, they act all high and mighty but they have no problem getting women to take off their clothes for the camera. I know that it is the ultimately the model's choice, but it just kind of makes me sad that they think this is the only way to raise awareness on this topic.

Women's are way more sensous and beautiful then men's body. People, not just men, like to look at beautiful things. This is something women should be proud of: That we're the beautiful ones. We should be able to show it off if we want to, be proud. It gives us more power than you think.

Wow, thecarbolicsmokeball, you sure know a lot about women and their sex drives. *Sarcasm* I totally fantasize about pregnancy and babies when I'm in the act.

I have no problem with women wanting to bare it all. I don't think that it demeans women at all. Women are sexual creatures too. Sure they may be doing it for the attention, or for their money, or just because they love doing it, but that is their choice. I don't feel threatened by skinny nude models in magazines, because beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, no matter how society tries to set the standard. You are right though, sex does sell better than anything. And I agree, more men should be dropping trou ;)

There is a photographer that I love, he takes pictures of naked people....not models for ads but real people. Real people who travel to these locations and get naked in masses. A lot of people who participate in this find that it's freeing and up lifting. It's something they could never normally do except for that one moment where size and shape doesn't matter....they are all different naked people there to create one beautiful picture. You can check out a story on it here
