Perez Hilton: Is he pro or anti-gay?

We at Shine have never been fans of blogger Perez Hilton. Though he breaks juicy celebrity news stories and is sometimes funny, more often than not he is unrightfully cruel and downright offensive. Perez was praised for calling attention to the issue of gay marriage during the Miss USA pageant and forcing Miss California, Carrie Prejan, to publicly address her stance. While yes, we appreciate the raised awareness on the topic, may we go out on a limb and say Perez asked that question on the judging panel for the sake of being controversial and drawing attention to himself? His self-aggrandizing attitude along paired with the constant negative spin he takes on stories are a complete turn off.

Now Perez has gotten himself back in the news with a public feud with producer/rapper will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas. "I don't need to respect you, and you're a f-- ," said Perez. "You're gay, and stop being such a f-- ot." GLAAD organization is not happy with the blogger. A spokesperson for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation says, "These are vulgar anti-gay slurs that feed a climate of hatred and intolerance toward our community. For someone in our own community to use it to attack another person by saying that it is 'The worst possible thing that thug would ever want to hear,' is incredibly dangerous. It legitimizes use of a slur that is often linked to violence against our community. And it sends a message that it is OK to attempt to dehumanize people by exploiting anti-gay attitudes."

We have to agree. We don't believe in that "I'm ___ so I can use a ___-related slur" attitude. Why would Perez use such a negative term about being gay to offend someone if he preaches gay rights? This just furthers the distaste we have for Perez. His few beneficial contributions are always tainted by crude, nasty remarks or offensive, obnoxious and uneducated behavior. Yes, he is the "queen of all media," but we kind of wish he would just go away.

Do you think Perez causes more harm than good, or do you think in the end Perez is an outspoken blogger who inspires constructive conversation? [E!]

He's disgusting.. plain and simple. You neglected to mention that he called Prejean horrible names in his bid for attention. This is just another example of a fame w----, with no viable talent, doing whatever he can to get his name out there. If someone else did what he did, he would be all over the news calling it a hate crime and demanding an apology.

    he's a waste of space.

While entertaining, the guy was wrong to use 'gay' and ' f-- ot' in a negative way. He should apologize.

He is not anti-gay, but he is a poor representative of the gay community. I think you are right, he is just trying to draw attention to himself. And while no publicity is bad publicity, I do not think his behavior is benefitting the GLBT community at large.

His just a complete waste of space and the fact that he used that word to elicit a rise out of someone proves it. He's made a career out of invading people's privacy and desperately trying to out celebrities. I think he hates himself and that's why he is so anti-gay.

Thank you Joanna for posting this. I wanted to write something about his poor choice of words when insulting the BEP manager but I'm relaxing with a little vacay for myself (oh and my mother is in town). I think he's an a%* and wearing out his welcome in the public eye. You promote gay marriage and gay rights and then turn around and yell that word at someone? Jerk. I hope his 2 seconds of fame are over.

I went on his page the other day and he was talking about Kristen Bell's cellulite. Anyone talking about a woman's cellulite should beshushed. WE ALL HAVE IT!!! I'm sick of this topic. I wouldn't want to see him in any type of bathing suit. Go Away!!

Perez is an unintelligent person who's claim to fame is his flamboyant style and insipid putdowns. He's really stupid and has to try and be flashy in order to hide the fact that he's really stupid and uneducated. He's boring and self centered and completely not interesting. Has nothing to do with his sexual orientation.........he's just a fool and a moron.
