Picture of the Week: Katy Perry is hot, hellfire hot

ikissedagirl_hell.jpg
Last week there was much ado about a church sign put up in Ohio that played on a line from Katy Perry's hit song and read "I kissed a girl / and I liked it / then I went to heck." It got taken down within 24 hours, but apparently that had less to do with the bad national publicity and more to do with local outraged churchgoers who didn't catch the pop culture reference and were just appalled at the mere mention of gay issues in public. ("What? It's on a sign? That's just free advertising for the queers!") The line was almost funny, because it's clever and snarky -- what you'd expect from Gawker, not an Evangelical church. But it's not funny because the people behind it still believe in their hearts that lesbians in loving committed relationships (never mind experimental college students) will burn for all eternity in the firey pits of heck because they were born gay (or even just because their lips momentarily brushed up against another girl's...the horror, the horror!). We could understand a church reviling the likes of that Internet porn (if you can call it that) phenomenon 2 Girls, 1 Cup (if you somehow don't know what that is, do yourself a favor and don't look it up) -- now that surely is a sign of the Apocalypse (and by the way, it had nothing to do with being gay). But a fun pop song about fairly innocent, youthful, sensual experimentation? Brothers and sisters, please. Besides, lesbians are usually the kind of people who fight for peace and women's equality and decent vegetarian food -- they make the world a better place. And they're probably the ones who make the most comfortable shoes in heaven, too.

They were not born gay. God would not create someone gay, and then condemn them for being that way. God is a loving and merciful God, He loves the sinner, but not the sin. They can be delivered and restored to health if they want to be. I know many that have! It is a choice!!

It's the same old story... if you condemn gays, you're an uptight, religious fanatic.. on the other hand, if you bash Christians, you're just being truthful, not hateful. Why is not accepting homosexuality considered intolerant, but hating Christians is A-ok and considered enlightened and the "right" way to believe?

    55 live.. you're a bumbling idiot.

okay since i know God will forgive me, let me repent and be "un-gay"...

    are you serious??

if god doesn't create gay people well then why would he give them the tools to develop into this over time?

lets open up our minds here people, this is not a sin... this is life..

everyone has the right to choose how they live it so quit preaching about your special "god" and pay more attention the universal way of looking at things. live and let live.

I second that easymarshhead. People seem to be unaware that there are documented cases of animals in the wild being gay. Are they going to hell? Everyone has the right to live according to their desires.

It's a song so I think people should get over it. And yes I agree with 55live@prodigy.net...god loves the sinner not the sin. But I have kissed a few of my 'girl' friends bc i love them like I would kiss someone in my family and it's not sexual at all. So i guess it depends on your definition of kissing a girl.

I third that easymarshhead! 55 live says, "They can be delivered and restored to health if they want to be." Restored to what health? Are they sick? At the end they say, "It's a choice!!" Well, hallelujah! Darn right it is! The Church was wrong to post that sign. It really does send the wrong message. Yes, easymarshhead, there is no "special God". He is everybody's God, regardless of faith or sexual orientation. Live and Let Live, heck yeah!

I just think its really unfortunate that people think that being "gay" is a sin. In reality, i think if people would just mind there own buisness, they can enjoy life themselves. Who is to say what makes another person happy? it just makes me sick to see people campaigning about the issue when there are more important things going on in the world, then how someone else is living there life. people dont just wake up and say " hey im gay" and why do people get devestated when some one comes out? i dont even understand why they have to, nobody says " hey Im straight." maybe its just me, im okay with it and those who have a problem should just live there life like they want and let others do the same.

I think being gay is between the individual and God. It is not for me to decide who someone else loves. Christianity is about love and not judgement... supposedly. I do believe God is love and that is what matters, unfortunatley most christians believe it is their duty to dictate to others what is right and wrong and how they should live their lives. Anyone that knows God, however, knows that your responsibility is to love, to forgive, and lead others to God. Not point out all the "mistakes" being made around you. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone, right?

Hey, 55live (1st response), you're an idiot. I am Catholic, straight, and socially aware. Did you choose to be straight? No, it was natural for you. Why would anyone choose to be gay? They know from a young age that living life as a gay person would be a million times harder than living as a straight person, so why would they choose it? Scientists have also proven that animals in nature quite often "mate" with their own sex repeatedly, so it's about as natural a thing as you can get. It's in the Bible, you say? Well so are passages advising men to sell their daughters as sex slaves; God didn't write the Bible, humans did. Get some sense and awareness. My mom was taught in Catholic school in the 60's that both pre-marital sex and murder could send you to hell. Does that make sense? Neither does what you're saying.
