Post-breakup etiquette: Jessica Simpson’s family has no loyalty

Some people remain friends with their exes, but that's not always the easiest or the best choice. In the case of Jessica Simpson, she was dumped by Tony Romo right before her massive Barbie-themed birthday party. Not cool. You'd think her family would be extra supportive during this time, but instead they have made some slightly questionable moves.

After word of Jessica's breakup went public, her mother, Tina Simpson, felt the need to make an announcement about her fondness for Romo, saying how "we like all our exes." WTF, Tina! We don't like the ex that just broke our heart and humiliated us in front of our buddies! As if that weren't bad enough, yesterday Jess's sister Ashlee was photographed at a John Mayer concert. Of all the shows in town, she had to go to see Jessica's ex-boyfriend perform? That just seems wrong. We're not saying Ashlee has to give up listening to an artist she may enjoy, but if Mayer broke up with your sister would you be singing along front row at his concert a year later? We didn't think so.

Are you OK with your friends and family being pals with your ex, or do you think they should take your side and cut off contact? [US][Perez]

If Jessica Simpson was my sister I would DEFINITELY side with Tony Romo.

John Mayer's list of exes would mean that NO ONE would ever get to go to his concerts....and that wouldn't exactly be a loss. I can't stand that sighing singing. As for what her mother said, BFD, she wasn't in the relationship with him so it doesn't mean she has to hate him. I'm sure Jessica might be upset with him now, but it won't last forever. They had good times too.

Cutting off communication seems very immature and superficial. They're all adults, not in high school anymore.

I agree with desertsun. When my ex broke my heart and left me i told my family to stay out of it because it's between us. That's how relationships go, it doesn't always have a happy ending, but there's no need to families to take sides and get involved.

Well I've had a friend to take it upon herself to sleep with an ex of mine. The DAY after we broke up. Lets just say we are no longer friends. My family has been pretty good about staying out of my relationship, they would only step in if I was being hurt.

Don’t you think you’re taking this blog a little too seriously? Come on now. So what if Jessica’s sister went to a John Mayer concert? As someone else pointed out, John Mayer has a LONG list of exes. There would be NO ONE in that concert hall if all women and their families decided to take sides. As for Jessica’s mother, what does it matter if she made that comment? Obviously, it shows that a woman/mother has class b/c she is not badmouthing every man her daughter meets and breaks up with. Also, let’s face it, no one truly knows (or cares for that matter) why Jessica and Tony broke up. All we do know is that he broke up with her one day before her birthday—which is either characteristic of jerks OR that Jessica must have done something for that event to be the final straw. She herself does not have the best track record when it comes to end and ending a relationship. Do I want my sister to be best friends with my exes? Of course not. But if it’s been a whole year and I’ve dated someone else after that break-up (in the case of John Mayer) then why should I care if my sister happens to be a fan? This just all sounds so high school, it’s ridiculous.
