Should the father/daughter incest couple be sterilized?

As if the news from the polygamy ranch in Texas isn't bad enough, there's another mind blowingly disturbing tale making the rounds today: An Australian couple, who recently gave birth to a baby daughter, are also father and daughter. A judge separated John, 61, and Jenny Deaves, 39, on incest charges, but currently, they're simply "being monitored." According to a report this morning in the Australian Broadcasting System, a high profile child advocate, Professor Freda Briggs of the University of South Australia, claims the couple should be sterilized to prevent them from bearing more children.

The daughter should receive extensive counseling and the father should be rendered sterile, as well as, serve time. After the birth of the child, the mother should be allowed supervised visits but the child should be placed in foster care or with members of the extended family not associated with the ranch.

The report says the baby is healthy, but that their first child together died soon after birth due to a congenital disorder.

I think they should not be allowed to have more children together because of the high risk of deformities and health problems. It's already going to be a trial for their daughter, mentally anyway. She will forever be known in the area as the incest kid. If they are good parents to the child then I think it's fine to keep her, as long as they are monitored to make sure the child's mental health is being taken care of. They are two consenting adults after all....I personally would not go for that kind of situation but hey whatever floats their boat.

Sterilization shouldn't be a second thought, do it. Not because this is the most disgusting thing I have read but because of the health of the children and the problems that could arise in the future.

Wow...lots of one-sided comments here about how the man needs to be sterilized and imprisoned, while we should hold the woman's hand and grant her counseling. The daughter in this incestuous couple is 39 years old. Exactly how old does she have to be before we can stop calling her the victim for engaging in deviant sexual behavior?

The bottom line is this: whatever happens should happen to both of them. If you want to cater to the woman's mental problems and offer her therapy and counseling, you would be a hypocrite to not cater to the man's mental problems and offer him therapy and counseling. If you imprison the man for willingly engaging in incest, you must imprison the woman for willingly engaging in incest.

I also feel it is very presumptuous and downright sexist to assume that the man is at fault for the origins of this relationship. The only information given by this news article is that the father is 61 and the mother is 39. There are NUMEROUS scenarios in which this incestuous relationship could have developed, and not all of them include the father as the aggressor and the daughter as the victim. If this were an adult/child incestuous couple, that would be a fair assumption, but at 61 and 39 years old respectively, it's equally likely that the father could be suffering from Alzheimer's or another form of dementia while the daughter could be schizophrenic or a traumatized rape victim from a third party.

Try to look at the situation from a fair, objective standpoint instead of immediately seeking to punish the man and run to the woman's aid, because your assumptions of who is the perpetrator and who is the victim are very likely wrong, since they're based entirely on assumption.
