Should we ban "back pornography?"

I feel like the whole Miley Cyrus scandal was a just a tad bit, I don't know, overblown no? But on the tail end of that whole moment comes another controversial "back porn" image featuring some ladies that are actually over 18. Still, the Star Ledger reports that the naked backs in a new KRock radio station ad campaign appearing on billboards all over New York and New Jersey have stirred up the pot, with some residents of Denville, New Jersey saying the ads are lewd and should be taken down. After getting a few complaints Mayor Ted Hussa felt compelled to ask the station if they might change it. No such luck, but apparently they were receptive to the idea of avoiding advertising in certain zip codes in the future.

Tasteful? Eh, no. Shockingly lewd? Not really. (K-ROCK)

Alrighty then. Here's the ad in question. What do you think? Myself, I don't know. It's certainly not designed per my taste (and oh wow, it objectifies women, what else is new?), but I don't think it's overly lewd and I've definitely seen worse elsewhere and certainly on prime time TV. I mean, come on. No one says a damn thing when we see a man's back or even a man topless, (and yeah, images that objectify men happen a lot, too, or at least enough to help level the playing ground a bit). But why the crazy double standard? Boobs? Yes, boobs are shocking. Also shocking that over half of the world's population have a set, yet America remains one of the most nude shy, overly conservative nations on Earth when it comes to nudity, and apparently, we're really into banning sexy ads right now.

Okay, I told myself I wouldn't rant on that subject, but I gotta ask: When did bare backs become so pornographic? What's the big deal?

I was born in Europe and nudity above the waist (front or back) wasn't really all that sexual. Remember that OJ commercial in the movie Euro Trip? That wasn't very far-fetched. I guess people see things differently back there. It's just skin. What's the big deal? I was really shocked a few years ago when my ex told me he's never seen his siblings or parents in their underwear. I was dumbfounded. What's wrong with seeing your family in their underwear?

It also seems to me that sexual fetishes, molestations, assaults etc., are not as frequent in Europe as they are here. Maybe these are related somehow.

I still don't have a problem with nudity. If people want that kind of attention, get naked, run around and take photos of themselves, I say let them be. They're the ones who will remember it for the rest of their lives. 99% of the population will forget after a week.

The ad is provacative and attractive the KRock's target audience...men between the ages of 15-45...

The women are beautiful from the back...

But some people squirm when faced with this type of bold-face temptations...it's really about them, not the ad.

I just regret that young women today don't feel that this sort of advertising is somehow a step in the wrong direction in terms of women's empowerment.

I believe you can keep your clothes on and still be beautiful...and you can be taken more seriously when you do.

    Just one opinion...

I think the picture of Miley Cyrus is beautiful but its still a little to old for her. I don't think its provacative but still a little much for a 15 yr old. The pictures that she took of her self are worse than that one.

I think the whole back taboo is laughable. It's a BACK for Pete's sake! The ad is a lot more provocative because it suggests that the women aren't wearing anything. And other than the picture of Miley just not being a good picture of her, it could easily have been a backless gown. I would think the controversy over her pic would be more that she looks like she just got out of bed after a night of sex (messy hair, looks like smeared lipstick).

i think everyone needs to quit making such a big deal about this whole MILEY CYRUS picture. It's no big deal. Yeah, she is a tad bit young, but it's her decision. America needs to just SHUT UP and LEAVE THE GIRL ALONE.

Lets go back to classical paintings of the woman. Renoir for example. Women were most times depicted nude or at least partially nude. 9 times out of 10 u could clearly see boobage. Yes its a painting but thats the media they had back then. Yes women were on a different level socially but in modern "PC" day today those are considered masterpieces.

When did it become a sin to display the human body as a beautiful thing? Well i lay blame partially on organized religion and partially on the hypocritical American Conservatives. I say this American bcuz no Europeans would even give this a second thought. To them this is juvenile and petty.

I recall going to France in 2001 and being on a tour bus that stopped in front of a middle school. The kids were out for recess having a smoke break. This would be unheard of in the US. Now I'm not trying to get into a debate about smoking here. My point in referencing this is that somewhere along the lines when we separated from the Old Country, someone shoved a stick up our arses and made us holier than thou.

I love Miley Cyrus. She is a very talented beautiful young girl. She is a role model for alot of young girls. My niece is 9 years old and she loves her. The message she is sending is not good because she looks very young. She doesn't look sexy at all. I don't know what she is trying to impose with this pic. She is a good girl I haven't heard anything bad about her. She needs to wait a couple of years before she can a pic like that.

I think the controversy over the Miley Cyrus pic is ridiculous. The girl is fully clothed except her back. Her parents were at the photo shoot. I do realize that she's only 15 but it's only her back for heaven's sake. She's getting almost as much flack for this as Vanessa Hudgens did for those naked pics. This is a tasteful photo that some day she will look back on and be glad she had the opportunity to pose for a great photographer like Annie Lebovitz. When she's stumbling drunken and underpantless out of cars at 3:00 AM, then I'd worry about her sending a bad exanple to other girls.

I'm American but I lived in Europe for a little over 8 years. It is so amazing to me how ridiculously Puritanical a country we are. I've been to public pools in Germany and it's not uncommon to see women sunbathing topless or little children running around completely naked. Nudity is only sexualized because we've made it that way. I've heard this comment made about Americans and I think it's true...Americans are are prudish about sex but they love violence. There is nothing shocking or dirty about seeing a woman's naked back.
