a man who sleeps around is a STUD, a woman who does so is a SLUT.
a sexual double standard still exists (although not as much as before) and women are still judged more harshly for sleeping around. let me first be clear that i am against judging women on their sexuality and the pejorative term SLUT shouldnt be used for women at all.
but the thing is that SLUT & STUD are not the same thing!
becoming a stud, is not a choice for most men. a man needs to have certain positive qualities that makes him a stud. a stud is usually good looking, masculine, has a great personality, charm and probably status and popularity too. it is only this guy who can become what society calls a stud. this guy is then hailed by all the other men around him. other men et jealous of him because he is someone all other men want to be but cant be because its not a choice.
however becoming (what society unfairly calls) a slut, IS A choice for most women! all a woman needs to do to become a 'slut' is be willing to have sex. its so easy. a woman need not be exceptionally good looking, have a great personality, have status and fame in order to sleep around with a large number of men and get the 'slut' title... even a regular looking woman, with a mediocre personality (that hardly counts), little fame or status can become a 'slut' by simply choosing to sleep around with a large number of men.
when something is rare and much cvoerted..it is valued and respected. becoming a stud is something that which most men cant do but want to do. its not a choice...it requires certain positive qualities to become one...hence they are hailed as studs.
but when something is easily gotten without much effort and only requires willingness, it loses its value. so when a woman sleeps around with a large number of men, no other women gets jealous of her because they know they can do it as well only if they wanted. hence we dont have a FEMALE STUD in society.
having said this, im against judging women negatively for sleeping around.....but women can never become STUDS.

Report AbuseI do agree with you assessment on the terms being disparate. An unattractive man who sleeps with a large number of women would never be considered a stud however a promiscuous woman of any stature is resigned to being a slut.
As far as the talk of a sexual double standard I really feel that is regurgitated feminist rhetoric that was probably true at one time but has long since been made obsolete. Historically, women were judged more harshly for their sexual behavior because they had more to lose because of it (e.g. pregnancy, increased likelihood of STD contraction). In addition to that, female promiscuity was linked to male promiscuity. If there were no women willing to participate in casual sex then a sex-hungry male couldn't act on his desires. In any event, HIV/AIDS dealt the final deathblow to the alleged stud/slut double standard because it made a link between sexuality and mortality. Anyone who was liberally sexual was seen as playing russian roulette with their lives so the mystique was gone.
As it stands today, sexual promiscuity should be viewed as inglorious for both genders but human biology just makes it such that women will always have more to lose from casual sex than men. Sexual biochemistry between genders has been scientifically proven to be different where women are prone to forming chemical attachments after sex whereas men dont. Women are eight times more likely to be infected by a partner with an STD than a man is. Pregnancy is still a consequence whose burden falls largely upon the woman. It's for these reason that I can understand why female over-sexuality is often criticized and I don't think that will ever change.
