The first online daters celebrate their 25th anniversary!

Chris Dunn and Pam Jensen, a couple that some are referring to as "the silver surfers," are socking it to those who hold on to the outdated notion that online dating can't lead to anything serious. In fact, the couple, who just celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary, are being heralded as the first two people to meet online... EVER!

Technically, they met before any online dating services even existed, when they were two of the first users of the CompuServe CB Simulator, a pioneering form of what we'd now refer to as instant messenger. In perhaps the greatest understatement ever, Pam acknowledges to The Sun that "Computers weren’t as pervasive as they are now." Yes, so true. And certainly, online dating has become oh, shall we say, a lot more popular as well? For example, according to M/Cyclopedia of New Media, since the most popular dating site of all, Match.com started back in 1995, "more than 60,000 new people register on Match.com every day, and it has grown to more than 15 million members with profiles posted, active users and about one million paying subscribers from more than 246 countries." Online Dating Magazine estimates that more than 20 million people visit dating services each month, and that "more than 120,000 marriages a year that occur as a result of online dating."

And just think, it all began with these two silver surfers. Cute! Of course, I still know people who met online and make up these elaborate stories about how they met on a cruise ship and crap like that. What do you think? Is online dating as taboo as it used to be?

It depends upon how courageous you are. I try to be open-minded despite my own nightmarish experiences with online dating sites...ha ha ha....most people I know say how can you become attached to someone you've only had an online relationship with? Because of my own personal experiences and being a single parent of two beautiful girls I will just say anyone who chooses this option should be careful and spend at least six months together in person first before taking things to the next level. There are too many people that pray on the naive and overly trusting out there. When all is said and done it's risky but as many successful business people will tell you with great risk comes great gain -- or great ruin. In an age when many lead busy lives it is a convenient way to make new friends and who knows what may develop from there? There is no substitute for face-to-face contact. Just realize if you are a single parent there is a LOT more at stake and proceed with caution...

I had a 5 year relationship with a gentleman I met on Match.com. He was a wonderful man. I'm currently in a relationship with a gentleman I met thru Plentyoffish.com, 2 years now!

Kudos to them! Any relationship that lasts that long (nowadays anyways) deserves to be recognized! Besides, what alternative do single people have today...the BAR?? Probably not! I wish them the best!

I think that is a very great story. Online dating has definitely become more acceptable now adays. I met my boyfriend online in a chatroom and we've been together for almost 9 years now, most of my friends that I feel close to and trust the most I have met online also. We don't just keep it online, we make the cross over and meet in person to hang out and have fun. It's a great way to meet people who have the same interests as you, especially when you live in a small town with a limited amount of decent guys. I like to tell people that I imported my boyfriend after we met online. :D

I am one of the many people who met their significant other online and we recently have gotten married. It is quite exciting! I do not see it as a taboo more like a different way of meeting a person rather than going for something of the "norm" say, meeting someone at the bar... how outdated is that!

In all fairness, these two people probably weren't looking for a mate online back then...they just happened to find each other, like fate. Going online purposefully to browse a dating site is not the same as how these two met. Just wanted to point out the difference!

It's great that the online dating thing has worked out for them, but personally, I'm still a skeptic. I guess it's that I like face to face interaction. I gives me the oportunity to interpret facial expressions and body language.

That's certainly not to say that online dating doesn't work, and I'm open-minded enough to experiment with it if the right situation presented itself. Someone would really have to arouse my curiosity, though.

The problem with online dating is that people start treating each other like "virtual" people -- no basic courtesy, searching for the best person with the best characteristics, finding someone, dropping someone else, popping up, disappearing . . . it's an extremely demeaning way to interact with people. And not to mention 50% of all online members get no responses at all because they are not attractive enough. . . .
