The future of love and sex

Robot sex slaves? Virtual second lives? The future of love and sex is upon us, and it doesn't look so bad after all.

Earlier I blogged about some of the random predictions associated with futuristic advances in the sex and love realm, as in, 100 percent divorce rates, gay polygamists, you know, fun stuff like that. But recently I've come across some slightly maybe more positive forecasts, like sex toys programmed by our lovers, and video killing the coffee date (perhaps heralding the end of Starbucks and its cruel crack-laced beverage monopoly!?).

This article is Tango isn't too far-fetched. The predictions are, after all, for 2012, so you know, no one's saying anything ridiculous like we'll be living in spaceships or anything like that, but acknowledging that the prevalence of online personas and dating in addition to more ergonomic (not to mention multi-tasking) sex toys will be the way of the future makes sense to me. I mean, don't we already have iPod vibrators and stuff (or did I just wishful think that up)?

Another source of endlessly entertaining predictions comes via Mental Floss mag's just out on stands Future of Sex issue. I'm still waiting to get my hooks on it (where the heck do you find this magazine, anyone!?), but the coverlines promise some pretty fascinating topics: "The Death of the Y Chromosome," "Pregnancy 2.0: Womb on a Chip," "Why Cloning Will Never Replace Sex," and "Sniffing Your Way to Healthier Kids." I assume the latter article deals with the data that claims people subconsciously react to their partner's smell and make decisions about reproducing with them, and how we'll have apparatuses to help make a more conscious decision, or not. Maybe people will be walking around with genetic sniffers that look like beachcomber metal detectors.

My prediction? Owning your own Real Doll will be as common as the household microwave, which we obviously won't need anymore because we'll be able to heat leftovers with our minds.

Anyway, I'd really like to hear from you. In your opinion, what does the future of love and sex hold for you?

Here's a future conundrum; if you have sex with your house robot (think Rosie from the Jetsons) and you switch the voice from male to female (or vice versa) is that going to mess around with gender roles? Would that be considered rape? Could you program the robot to thwart your advances, only to succumb to your human domination?

Ahhh the times we don't live in.
