User post: It’s All In The Brain - Surprising Facts About Men and Women

by Karin Manske

“Talk low, talk slow and don’t say too much.” -John Wayne

It hasn’t been until the last 15 years that modern technology and sophisticated research has allowed scientist to observe and prove how men and women brains work differently. While in the 70s and the 80s men and women tried to be equal, which really meant “the same”, the focus has shifted to “equal, but different”! While researchers are making the most amazing discoveries, many people are still completely unaware of these facts.

The differences are quite shocking. Most of us have noticed that men and women ’speak a different language’. Now scientists are providing the evidence. Not only do we feel differently, we also listen, think, observe, process information and approach problem solving from completely different angles!

What impact will this information have on our lives? For most people this comes as a big relief: It is after all nobody’s fault that we have such a hard time getting along. We really are just different!

For Example:
Men and women listen differently. Women engage in the process. They nod their heads or vocalize to show that they follow the conversation. Men pay attention quietly. They sit still and absorb the information without demonstrating that they understand. I first noticed this when leading a seminar for an all male audience. I conducted my class the same way I would normally present it to women. A little while into the seminar I started getting nervous. Something wasn’t quite right! My students were just sitting there staring at me. “Maybe they don’t understand my point?”, I thought. “Or, maybe they don’t agree with what I am saying?” So I asked: “Are you following me so far?” Everybody nodded and I relaxed. Teaching this first class for men was a stressful experience. Little did I know that it was just the difference in how men and women absorb information!

A Few Facts:
Male and female brains are built differently. While men access each part of the brain for specific tasks separately, women access both parts of the brain for lot’s of things. For example: when men use language, the right side of the brain is active. When women speak, they access both hemispheres of the brain at the same time. This is true for most other activities. When women listen, both parts of the brain are engaged while men concentrate in one side at a time. In women, both sides of the brain are busy ’seeing’ while in men only the left side is active. This explains why so many times women seem confusing to men and what we say makes no sense at all. Not only do women multi-task, we also multi-think, multi-speak and we do tend to see things from many different angles.

in a sence this is quite true. but another thing about women is they think so much they miss the little details.

women may use both sides of there brain to process information, conversation, and listening. but while at the same time over analyzing and missing the simple message being given..

I often find that women are too unfocused on the here and now and a willing attempt to communicate by myself (or another man) gets bogged down in too much unnecessary and distracting baggage. They are far too fixated on a plethora of past experiences and emotional input, both historical and current. Maybe if they could disengage their other half brain they could be fully "present". :) Anyway I have learned to play along with the historical and emotinal baggage and try to help the women I realte to acheive the feeling they have been heard and understood on the many levels they seem to crave.

this is B.S, the reason we act and react so different is because from the second we're born we are treated either as a boy or as a girl there is no biological difference in the brain, so yeah we may act different but thats not how it has to be. its not predetermined!

i was really amazed how Our almighty god created human being.

In the first place this is because of the hormonal characteristics that affect brain functioning, not only the brain but the entire body itself. Mens had testosterone and women had estrogen..

But in my own perception men are more intelligent than women..

While my man tends to 'bob' his head (perhaps too much and too mechanically) while listening to someone-especially a long winded person; I notice that I tend to nod my head (less mechanical and much slower)as well I try and maintain eye contact. On the other hand, due to insecurities, I tend to actually feel uncomfortable when someone really does listen and pay attention and make eye contact while I'm speaking. Also I've come to learn that my man actually does hear; "blah-blah-blah" when I speak. Something in his head turns off! When I had a male boss and I would go to him with a problem; (ususally I was upset about something) my emotions got in the way and he was of an analyitcal mind ( a computer programmer) and he had trouble understanding the problem through all the clutter(emotional garbage) that was tagged on to my words. I finally learned (for a while) to "state the facts, ma'am, only the facts". Now if only I could remember that to talk to my husband.

I'm a good multi-tasker only at work, because I am required to be. When I am at home I get completely absorbed in one project at a time.

I am probably more emotional than the average (mean) male. However, hot-headed men are much, much, much more emotional and irrational than me.

Note to inferno. Your comment demonstrated the very qualities that men note when they talk about women being emotional. Men may or may not be more intellegent than we. We could get some statistics from wikipedia, or ignore it, or politely demure, without getting angry. Part of the reason we don't is probably training; another part is probably genetic.

Robert, one of the reasons I dwell on the past, is that past experiences are what I rely on to assess the present. "How reliable and trustworthy is the person talking to me?" "What has happened when I acted in such a way in the past?" "Has anything like this ever been done?"

I admit that I thought that everyone was like this. My brother seems to base a large degree of judgement on past experience, (at least when we talk.)

    To Inferno

There you go, he expressed an opinion and had a stupid reaction... Why resort to insulting showing how weak you are and not being able to discuss without fighting, why does your ego has to be hurt if you are truly that intelligent? There was nothing in your message that shows you are more intelligent, only who has no intelligence reacts in such manner insulting another for something he said and it shows clearly it was a provocation and you stupidly fell in the trap!!

Men and women intelligence is the same, the difference is both work better in predefined situations, there are many factors that accentuate this difference, such as cultural, in this case women have been segregated for centuries so they haven't had the oportunity to express themselves from the early ages, so it is because of this only a perception that men seem to be more intelligent, other factors are also biological, hormones, and social...etc

But to say who is more intelligent is stupid... we should always take each individual separately, it does not matter if it's a man or a woman, and judge the individual, without looking at the gender!!
