User post: Pharmacy refusing to sell contraceptives... ALL of them!

So, I just watched a video on Yahoo from the Associated Press that was on location at a pharmacy in Virginia that refuses to sell contraceptives. In Virginia, pharmacies are given the option to opt-out of selling any form of birth control. The pharmacists cited a "pro-life" stance as his reasoning for refusing to sell such items.

I myself am pro-life - pro-life in the sense that ALL life should be viewed as sacred. I am not a fan of abortion, nor am I a fan of the death penalty. I don't think women should be punished for having an abortion, but I feel we need to better educate people on how to avoid pregnancy, and that means other options besides abstinence (which maybe 5% actually follow).

That being said, I think it's pretty radical of this pharmacy to refuse to sell any form of birth control. This includes condoms, spermicides, pills, shots, patches, etc. The people shopping in the pharmacy shared how they supports it's "cause" stating "in most pharmacies there is medicine that can kill a baby in the womb", meanwhile a woman who wasn't supportive said, "I believe it's a female's choice." These phrases sound like antiabortion/prochoice quotes, but is that really what we're talking about here? Is that really what this pharmacy is fighting by not selling birth control? I think not.

To me, what they're promoting is abstinence - amongst EVERYONE. I'm a married woman, which I suppose makes it "morally" okay for me to have sex. But, according to this pharmacy, does not make it okay for me to use a condom. I'm not ready to have kids yet, so am I not allowed to have sex either?

If this all comes down to whether this pharmacy taking a stand on not selling the "morning after pill", then they've taken it a little too far. Now, not only will they not help you "extract" a most likely not yet fertilized egg, but they will also not help you avoid getting pregnant in the first place.

Do you think they've gone too far?

There are many who believe sex should only be used for procreation, so using a condom would result in a failed attempt at making babies, and therefore, a sin. :) And you're not supposed to like sex, either.

I bet all those people are working in that pharmacy.

Wow..this was very interesting. Thank you for posting it.

I THINK IT'S OUTRAGEOUS!! The pro-life people don't want us to have abortions, but yet they don't want us to try and prevent pregnancy? That's bass ackwards! I live in NC and I swear if anyone tries that sh!t down here, I'm gonna protest. I need my damn birth control pills!

Don't people like that realize that they are causing more pregnancies that should not have happened, because the parents aren't responsible yet? I mean when people have all those kids since they can't get birth control, most of the people won't be ready to raise the kids. This will generate kids with no boundries. Lots of them. I hope they all tear his pharmacy up. I despise morons.

Oh,definately yes, this pharmacy has gone way over the edge. I am pro-life myself, but I do believe in better sex ed and in using birth control rather than abortion;and I believe that birth control should be the woman's choice.

That is so backwards. That should be illegal. I don't know how they are getting away this behavior.

Yeah I'm a pro lifer and I can't for the life of me understand where all this anti- birth control stuff is coming from.

Thing is, I know the science behind it. Most of the time, 70% of the time, fertilized eggs never implant. So I don't see birth control/PlanB as preventing implantations as an end to an actual life. That fertilized egg will probably not implant anyway. I honestly believe, after my college education and researching the facts of endocrinology and development, life begins at implantation. But few are able to see it this way, even if they know the science.

Ok, so fine, don't offer plan B or birth control because you think it's preventing the potential for a life to continue living. But condoms? Come ON! That is by FAR the biggest stretch I've seen.

Maybe this pharmacy is by Catholics and for Catholics only, and an isolated case. In that sense, I could probably see the sense in it. After all, if people who come into your store aren't going to buy these things anyway, why sell them? But to not carry condoms is a bit nutty to me.

I am pro life and a Christian, but I understand the rest of the world is not, and I cannot force the behaviors of my faith in worship to my God onto people who don't have the same loyalty or even a belief in Him. But I would love to save as many unborn innocents as possible, through education, cultural view change, and the endorsement of contraception.

Just go to Yahoo! Answers and you'll see teen kids asking about if they're possibly pregnant and it's clear none of them know how to even put a condom on, how sex creates life, and yet feel that they must have sex in order to signify their romantic relationships. It's so sad. What's happening to our country?

I was just as upset as the OP when I read about it, for the same reasons, and because it's just plain embarrassing to be lumped in with whackos and extremists. :(

But at least this pharmacy is making no bones about the fact that they will not sell contraceptives of any sort, Rx or not. If you need them, don't go here. (Do I think it right? Sorry, if you don't want to "interfere with God's way" then find another line of work other than medicine, which inherently interferes with God's way)

Condoms are also used for prevention of STD's, forget about babies. Do they want all their children that are sexually active walking around with all sorts of diseases? I'm glad I don't live in this city.
