When did getting a bikini wax become a crime?

Recently, Cosmo had an article about Brazilian waxes, and how they're Empowering! And Everyone's Doing Them! And how they're Changing the World! And then Jezebel produced a post about that very terrible article, which has spawned a 300-count-and-growing comment thread that is mostly about how disgusting it is to remove your pubic hair; that they, the commenters, are Real Women and Women Have Hair; that to remove that hair is to Give in to the Patriarchy and Look Prepubescent--and generally, I want to say screw you.

My vagina, bereft of hair, remains a woman's vagina because holy crap! I'm a woman! It is also a lot easier to deal with and neater during my period, far more, way more, so ridiculously more sensitive during oral sex, and I know for a fact that sometimes a faceful of wet hair is not the most pleasant sensation in the world--I am nothing if not polite.

Why is it a problem that I want to wax? It doesn't hurt as much as everyone swears it does, I have the money for it, I am not doing it because it is hip, I am not an idiot who is doing it because Cosmopolitan magazine tells me that I have to if I want to be a real woman, a wreck who thinks my body is disgusting and needs to be fixed, a weakling who goes bare because my man tells me I better or I'm not getting any because that's the way vaginas in porn movies look.

I do it because I want to do it. I like it. I do not think your pubic hair is a problem--why is my lack a problem? I am as confused by the women in the gym, as one Jezebel commenter recounts, who criticize other women for having full and luxurious mounds of pubic hair as I am by the women who say that waxing is disgusting and wrong. What the heck people?

Which wave of feminism is it that talks about our right to make informed, well-thought-out decisions about our bodies? Because that's the one I want to be a part of. That's the one I want to bring back, the one where you say "My Body, My Choice," full stop, without going on to suggest that your body is wrong. Where women stop undermining each other over stupid crap, stop assuming that all women are the kinds of idiots who listen to women's magazines and base all their choices on their dictates, and start worrying about the important things. Like not the state of my vagina.

I couldn't agree with you more about the benifits of waxing. I have ALWAYS shaved or waxed the entire pubic region ever since it starting growing in as a teenager. I have been questioned by a few women & even a gynocologist (which was embarassing) about why I feel the need to remove all the hair on my girly parts! Well, I JUST DO! It feels better, neater, cleaner & looks nicer in my opinion... I don't like to watch 70's porn because there is too much hair blocking the view! I think it's funny how some people are so opposed to the idea of a good waxing! Get over it already!

Why does it even matter? I prefer to keep mine neat and bare also. Makes me NO less of a woman (though I have guy friends that have told me they prefer the "landing strip" so they don't feel like they are with a child, which I thought kind of an odd thing to say to start with). It's just cleaner in the long run. I like it like that and I do it FOR ME. Sheesh.......don't those women have anything else to do but bring other women down with their catty remarks?

why don't we just stop shaving our legs and pits too? I agree we all have the right to choose what makes us happy. Honestly I don't see how they can judge if they shave their legs because it's the SAME deal. Saying that you do it because a magazine says so or men prefer it. No, we do it because we like how it feels and looks. We'd still do it if no men were looking.

I really really have been wanting to get mine waxed or even sugared. Does anyone have any suggestions on which they would prefer?

Having a waxed pubic area does not make you less of a woman or some kind of slave to men! What is wrong with these people?

Talk about reverse feminism here! What ever happened to freedom of choice for women?

I shave every bit of hair off mine. I would wax but I haven't found a place around here that offers that (small town usa) hehe. The original purpose of pubic hair was to help keep our area clean from infections and what not when we roamed the earth without soap. Well now that purpose is null and void because we wear underwear....well most of us do anyway and take daily showers. For me, it is much easier to keep clean without the hair which also helps with any unwanted odors. Besides, nothing beats the feel of smooth p---- lips. It has enhanced sexual experiences because I get full contact on that area also. Plus, I know I don't enjoy a mouth full of hair when going down on my guy so I can't imagine he would either.

I can honestly say that it does not make me any less of a woman. As for the guy that likes the landing strip so he knows he's not with a girl, I would think the boobs would be a dead give away as well as our other badges of age lol.

I think its a little gross not to. I shave though because i heard waxing hurts and im a little scared to do it. But I feel soo much cleaner and I have not heard of one guy who doesnt like it. In fact I see guys getting grossed out when a girl doesnt shave. Plus I think it looks more attractive when it is waxed/shaved.

There are several home brazilian wax kits available for those of us on a budget. I have never paid for a wax. Avon makes one called SKIN SO SOFT Fresh & Smooth Hair Removal Microwave Wax For Face and Body. It is $15 and good for several waxings. Also there is a brand called Surgi Wax available at CVS for $7.
