Familiarize yourself with the color wheel. You have probably seen a color wheel before, but may not know how it applies to fashion. Like art or decorating, the concept is the same. You can look up a color wheel online, or find an inexpensive wheel at any art supply store. You may be surprised at how handy it can be when shopping for a stylish outfit.
A good place to start, primaries include red, blue and yellow. These basic colors can be combined to create strong contrasts in an outfit. A solid blue pencil skirt looks striking with a pair of bright yellow stilettos. You can often find primary colors already combined in some outfits. A bright red belt on a pair of navy slacks is a simple way to ease into color blocking.
