    4 Myths about Babies

Getty ImagesGetty ImagesFour smart-sounding (but wrong) ideas:

Myth 1: Touching your baby's soft spot can hurt his brain.

The fontanel, or soft spot, at the front of your baby's head is a skin-covered opening in the skull that pulsates, frightening some parents. "There's a presumption of vulnerability, but the brain is actually quite well protected," Adesman says. The front fontanel typically closes at about 1 year of age, while the smaller soft spot in the back of the head usually closes at 2 months to 3 months.

Myth 2: Babies should be bathed daily.

The truth is, bathing removes moisture from your baby's delicate skin, which can make it dry and irritated. Plus, sitting in soapy bathwater can irritate a girl's urethra and potentially lead to urinary tract infections. As long as you keep your baby's diaper area, neck and other skin creases debris-free, you can do full baths just two to three times a week, Adesman says. If your baby enjoys nightly tub time, splash away-just skip the soap.

Myth 3: Babies who achieve milestones early are gifted.

When a child first walks or talks has little or no bearing on his later successes, research shows. "Many parents support the idea of giftedness at birth, but this is not supported by the evidence," says Adesman. In fact, in some cases, early "achievements" may indicate a potential problem-for example, showing an inclination to be left- or right-handed before 18 months of age (children should use both hands equally until this age).

Myth 4: Babies need to poop at least once a day.

Parents often think a baby is constipated when he's not, says Andrew Adesman, M.D., chief of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at Schneider Children's Hospital in New York and author of 2009's BabyFacts. Newborns often have several bowel movements a day, but they may poop as little as every three to four days at about 2 months to 3 months of age, he says. If bowel movements are very hard and infrequent, or you see blood in the diaper, however, call your pediatrician.

I also think it is interesting that there was no mention made about the differences in the amount that a breastfed vs. a bottle fed baby sleep. Bottle fed (formula) babies spend more time asleep on average than the breastfed baby. The Breastfed baby stays more alert for longer periods.. the breastmilk is not as hard to digest. For example, We want to sleep after Thanksgiving dinner cause our bodies need all the energy it can get to digest as opposed to eating apples and oatmeal.

I thought newborns slept all day and cried all night and basically puke and poop all the time.
Can you reverse the schedule so they are up all day and sleep at night, or as a rule are they nocturnal creatures?

Stupid. Now some idiot will press on the soft spot. Still should keep hands off.

I am also a middle child so there are so many myths and truths about us trying harder and almost being invisible. What do you think about the subject?

Phew, I was getting concerned about my 6 month old daughter not picking a side, my sister is ambidextrous, as a baby she started using her left hand and my mom would always switch things to her right, she does everything with both hands just about the same, in some things she prefers her right and in others her left, her handwriting is the same in both though she prefers her left and her right in sports lol (btw my cousin learned how to write upside down because apparently being left handed is messy when writing)
As for my daughter, many people tell me since she turne to her right first reaching with her left she will be left handed but in truth she uses both pretty equally, I know, I've been trying to catch any signs of preference
Her father actually prefers her to be left handed, he has this idea that left handed people are more creative because the side of the brain they favor is used for that or some crazy stuff like that, lol
As for me I guess it would be easier her being right handed (hmm left handed scissors? Do they make left handed computer keyboards like with the number pad on the left side?), but honestly I don't mind at all wether she is a righty or lefty :)

Early handedness -- especially in the first year of life --- can be a sign of hemiplegia -- a form of cerebral palsy. Rolling from back to belly before 3 months of age can also suggest motor problems if it is associated with arching of the back. Likewise, a baby bearing weight on his or her legs at an unusually young age can also be a sign of increased muscle tone. Although babies will achieve all of these milestones (rolling, bearing weight on legs, and handedness) in the course of time, "precocious" attainment of these milestones can actually be a red flag for further assessment. Concerned parents should discuss their child's development with their pediatrician. Other parenting myths -- including several "Myth or Fact" quizzes can be found at www.BabyFacts.com.

      Where did my comment go?

there is generally nothing wrong with being a lefty or a righty, however, the studies about lefties and autism, dyslexia are true but it was also shown that lefties are more adept at physical stuff, major sports and so on. And they yend to do very well at it. Take the time out to note how many of the top athletes are lefties. Also, lefties are usually very good at things like acting. Bruce Willis, Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts to name a few are all lefties.

i wish they would add that picking up a crying child is not "spoiling" them. too many kids dont get the love and affection they need because of that antiquated notion.

I wrote with my left hand and my teacher would always try to make me use my right hand. I would continue to use my left hand and she would get mad. I broke my left wrist in 1st grade so I was forced to use my right hand. I still use both. I have no dyslexia or autistic tendencies at all.

      I don't know. I'm left-handed, and have been a chronic masturbater(or?) for quite some time now. I'm sure there's a connection.

you all need to relax.maybe go hug your kids.tell them you love them,no matter who they turn out to be.
    • HeatherR  •  2 years 5 months ago
OMG krj02004 I cannot believe that you actually felt a need to "correct your child's preference. News: If your child was meant to be left handed and if (according to your theory) develop these issues.. you child is going to develop those issue regardless of how much you "work" with them. Tell me... did you work with her the old fashion way they used to in school? LIke... smack their hand with a ruler or put them in the corner with a dunce cap cause they were following the NATURAL way that their brain worked? Sound Barbaric? Perhaps your method is as well... just not as physical.

      I hate babies
    • BABY DYI  •  2 years 5 months ago
I say my statement on left-handness because as a child when I stated school and was learning to write I saw my older step-brother (about 5 yrs older) write with his left-hand and it looked cool (ok to me) but my grandmother would see me copying him. She always took the pencil out of my left and put it in my right hand. I have used both hands at other task. I joke how my writing can look like chicken scratch, lol.

What about the ugly babies? What myths are there about them? YES! THERE ARE UGLY ASS BABIES!
    • Megz  •  2 years 5 months ago
I am a lefty for most things like eating and writing but when it comes to athletics like throwing a ball I use my right hand. And as far as scissors go I use right-handed scissors on my left hand.
