How to create budget-friendly word art

Here's a quick and easy idea for creating budget-friendly artwork for your walls. Do it with words. You don't have to be an artist. You don't even need to know how to paint. Just grab a computer, a canvas, some paper, a little Mod Podge or a few letter cut outs or stencils to get started. Here's a project you can do this weekend.

    • Word Collage

Do you need a really big piece of artwork for a bedroom or living room wall? Then take a trip to your local art supply, buy a blank canvas, a bottle of Mod Podge and a small can of light color stain. Pick a word theme, like Paris or children and write down as many words as you can think of that go with your theme. Example: Children, Kids, Little Ones, Precious People, Babies, Love, Motherhood, Fatherhood, Brother, Sister … and so on. You can even include the names of your kids. Then fire up your computer and find a pair of scissors.

Use different types of fonts and colors to print out multiple words in all different sizes. Then use your scissors to neatly cut them out. With a dab of Mod Podge on the back of each letter to hold them in place, arrange your words in all different directions - vertical and horizontal - like a collage on a canvas. After you've got all the letters placed, follow with a coat of Mod Podge to fix them to the canvas and to create a light seal on the piece.

Give your artwork a feeling of depth by taking an old rag, dipping it in a light color stain and rubbing a small amount around the outer edges of your canvas. You can even spread a little stain on random spots on the face of the canvas - the Mod Podge top coat should prevent you from covering your words completely. Use a clean rag to remove as much stain as desired - leaving a light but interesting accent on your new artwork.

    • Gallery Wrapped Canvas

If you can stencil, you can create this easy art piece. Purchase a set of alphabet stencils and a gallery-wrapped canvas. Paint the canvas a solid background color to complement your room and then stencil on your favorite saying with contrasting paint colors. It's that easy - you're done!

    • Stenciled Wall Sayings

Still not convinced you can be that handy? Then this is your project. Purchase a new rub-on stencil saying for your walls. Pick your spot, rub it on and you've got instant art.
