LeVar Burton's storied career includes playing Kunta Kinte on the miniseries "Roots," working as host and executive producer of "Reading Rainbow," and portraying blind Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," but it was his time on the Enterprise that he calls "seven of the best years of my life."
"We're all enormously good friends," he says of his "Star Trek" co-stars. Now that he's in New York City for a few days, he plans to see some of his old buddies, including Patrick Stewart, whom he affectionately refers to as "Old Baldy."
LeVar is also excited to celebrate the "Reading Rainbow" brand, which turned 30 this year, and the app that he hopes will create a love of reading for the new generation. "We took the television show and reinvented it as a tablet experience for kids," LeVar says. "Television was the technology that we used in the '80s. If you want to reach kids today, you've got to be on a tablet device. Foster a love of reading and connect kids to the real world through the literature that they read."
