9-Year-Old’s Love of Snakes Will Change Your Whole Perspective

Krista Guarino has over 20 pet snakes at her home, which she feeds, cares for, and literally hugs on a daily basis. The 9-year-old reptile expert fell in love with a corn snake when she was a toddler, and has been smitten ever since.

More recently, Guarino has taken to YouTube to share her passion for the slithery creatures with the world, and to change their reputation.

With her videos, Guarino hopes people will learn that snakes are not animals to be feared, but appreciated.

"What I like about snakes is their really cool patterns and colors and their smooth skin," Guarino tells the Good News Blog. "I know that they love me because when I hold them, I make sure they're safe, so they feel safe."

Guarino and her father Jamie keep the animals at their home and sanctuary outside Detroit. They range from a 12-foot long python to some as small as two feet, which Guarino proudly shows off in her videos and photos. Most of the snakes the family finds at snake expos, though they also enjoy searching for rattlesnakes in the wild. With the poisonous breeds, they help bring the snakes away from areas where people congregate, so they can prevent bites and keep the animals from harm.

While Guarino's friends may not be as keen with the idea of playing with snakes or housing them in their backyard, the little girl says they are slowly warming up to them.

"Sometimes people think snakes are crazy scary," Guarino points out. "But when they watch the videos, they think, 'If she can do it or he can do it, I can do it.'"
