The audience expected Ellen, but when the curtains peeled opened on the show Friday, Ellie Kemper walked out to surprise the audience!
It was the first time in the show's 11-year history that someone other than Ellen hosted the show, and Ellie held down the fort like a champion. The star of "Bridesmaids" and "The Office" came out dancing, smiling, and ready to rock.
"I know what you're thinking: Ellen sure does look different in person," Ellie joked in her opening monologue. "I am so excited to be here, and I want to start out by stating the obvious, that I have no idea what I'm doing."
Beginning her job for the day, Ellie noted that when she got the call to host that morning, she thought Ellen was pranking her. The actress admitted to being scared of the task at hand, but quickly got comfortable when she took over the stage. In fact, almost immediately, Ellie had her name swapped for Ellen's throughout the set.
"I am sorry Ellen, but when you're sick, this is my show, and I can do whatever you want, and I'm going to change it up!" The actress commented. "This is nothing like "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." This is The Ellie Kemper Show."
Ellen was out sick with the flu, but tweeted her support of the actress Friday morning, writing, "This was a first. In 11 years, no one else has every hosted my show. Thank you, Ellie."
Later, Ellen provided an update on her condition. "The good thing about staying home sick is that you get to watch TV all day. I just ordered a Chop Magic and a Spin Mop," she posted.
As an additional treat, the audience was invited back for one of this year's "12 Days of Giveaways."
Job well done, Ellie!
