There's Mariah Carey and there's the Chicago Gay Hockey Association. Both have holiday spirit and a nice falsetto, but their renditions of "All I Want for Christmas" are entirely, completely, 100 percent different.
Taking on Mimi's classic holiday jam, the Windy City sports league opted to cover the song in a rousing YouTube video that has the team doing pirouettes, kick lines, and hockey-turned-Broadway moves along an icy surface.
Their goal with the video - what they indeed want for Christmas - is to make it on Ellen.
"We just made it for ourselves to have fun," Andrew Sobotka, President of the association, told DNAInfo.com. "What inspired us was we love that song, we play it year round. I'm not even kidding, it's on the jukebox every month of the year."
There are moments of perfect pitch…
… and others with perfect hits.
And almost group harmonies.
The video quickly took the eye of the virtual community, going viral shortly after its release. According to NBC Los Angeles, members of the association have been quoted in national outlets like Sports Illustrated, and the video got a nod on comedian Daniel Tosh's Tosh.0 blog.
"We're people who love to have fun, and we're always singing," Sobotka said. "Whitney and Mariah and all the other divas are our locker room pump-up music, so it's sort of a tribute."
Now it made it to Ellen's Good News! Everyone wins.
