If You Retweeted Ellen’s Oscar Selfie, You Did it for a Good Cause

A selfie doesn't have to be a selfish act. In fact, Ellen's Oscar selfie not only gave people around the world a good laugh, it also raised $3 million for charity.

Ellen took the star-studded selfie during Sunday's ceremony on a Samsung phone. The company, one of the official sponsors of the 86th Academy Awards, wanted to help Ellen reach her goal of garnering the most retweets ever, and offered to donate $1 to charity for every retweet of her epic selfie.

In a matter of hours, the photo was retweeted three million times -- the most retweets in Twitter's history -- resulting in a $3 million donation to a charity of Ellen's choice. The host decided to give half to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the other half to the Humane Society of the United States.

The selfie's 15 minutes is still going strong, now that it's become an official meme. In addition to the Doge, Drake and Simpsons versions of the photo, Lego artist Iain Heath (yes, there is such a thing as a Lego artist) built his own version using only Legos.

As the parodies and memes continue to roll in, one thing is clear: Lupita Nyong'o's brother Peter continues to be the luckiest Oscar date of all time.
