The Story Begins with Edgar Alan Pig

On 60 sprawling acres in Victoria, Australia, over 300 rescued farm animals run wild, free, and in great company. It's an almost fairy tale land called Edgar's Mission, a sanctuary where farm animals live in endless bliss, thanks to one very cute oinkster named Edgar Alan Pig.

"It started with a pig," Pam Ahern, founder of Edgar's Mission tells the Good News Blog. "Edgar Alan Pig. To say I adored that pig is an absolute understatement."

In 2003, Pam rescued Edgar as a baby, and fell so wholeheartedly in love with him that she changed her entire life to base it around him. She founded Edgar's Mission, a nonprofit sanctuary dedicated to saving farm animals, quit her job at a factory, and doubled her 30 acres of farmland to accommodate the growing family.

"I said goodbye to ever having a normal life," she recalls. "I even gave up my partner of 10 years when he gave me ultimatum, 'It's me or the pig."

There was no question.

With sheep dancing around her and roosters constantly crowing, Pam has spent the past decade changing the face and idea of livestock. The mission of the reserve is simply "kindness," and with that, Pam aims to remove a label that sets farm animals apart from cats, dogs and wildlife when it comes to whose lives deserve to be saved.

Accordingly, Pam uses every day to give these animals the sweet taste of freedom, and every weekend to speak around the country promoting her cause. She has exhausted her life savings to build and expand the mission, and the result is what appears to be a nonstop party of furry friends.

It's all just an ordinary day at Edgar's Mission. While the star of the show may no longer be around (Edgar passed away in 2010), his spirit remains the guiding force of the reserve.

"I really believe in goodness of human heart," Pam notes. "I truly believe we can live happy and healthy lives without harming others."
