A Stranger’s Kindness Gives a Family in Need a New House... And Hope

Two weeks ago, Vaughn Luton, Lori Rippy and their four children lost their house, their belongings, and their beloved dog in a fire. It may have felt that all was lost for this couple from Aliquippa, PA, but the generosity of their community has given them a fresh start and a lot of hope for the future.

After a grease fire burned their home to the ground, Lori and Vaughn spoke to reporter Marty Griffin from Pittsburgh local news outlet KDKA. He put the word out, and was soon contacted by a stranger who wished to give a house to the Luton family - completely free.

"He had a house available, he had money, and he just wanted to do something good," Vaughn tells the Good News of this generous stranger named George. Lori and Vaughn now consider George a part of their family.

"It was very uplifting, one of the most wonderful things someone has done," says Lori. "He was definitely a godsend at a time in need, it was a dark hour for us and he came shining through with a house."

This isn't the only act of kindness bestowed upon the Lutons. Their daughter-in-law and her friends started a fundraiser to help them pay for food and clothing and to replace furniture and appliances. In just a few days, they surpassed their initial $5,000 goal and have now raised $8,600 and counting.

"These people are coming from everywhere," says Vaughn. "I've never heard of such a thing, of a community pooling together so fast. It's wonderful and we can't begin to thank everyone enough."

Lori and Vaughn want to thank their friends, family, and the members of their community for helping them in their time of need. They're especially grateful to George for providing them a new home, and to KDKA reporter Marty Griffin for starting this inspiring wave of generosity.
