User Post: Gym Etiquette: 5 Ways to NOT Tick People Off at the Gym

Do you ever have moments at the gym that are a little uncomfortable or get annoyed at those without gym manners? Here are some tips:

1. Put your weights (and anything else for that matter) back where you find them.
Have you ever wanted to use a machine only to find out a heavy lifter left all several hundred pounds of his weights on the machine? It's just good manners to put things back where you find them!

2. Clean your machine
I shouldn't have to put this on here, but we have all witnessed a drippy sweater soak a machine and then leave without so much as giving it a wipe...ICK!

3. Don't be a hog.
I get that there may be workouts that require you alternate machines/exercises, but please don't take up 3 machines at once and then get attitude with someone who mistakenly thinks you are finished with one machine because you are on another (I had this happen to me once). Try to be considerate and only use one machine at a time, especially if the gym is crowded.

4. Be respectful in classes.
At a gym I went to several years ago, there was a lady who would literally circle the room during aerobics, power pump, or pilates classes talking to other ladies in the class. Most tried to brush her off, but she never got the hint. It got on everyone's nerves, not to mention how rude it was to the instructor!

5. Be nice to newbies.
We all get a little nervous the first few times we go to a new gym. Each gym has its own set of rules and it takes time to get used to how things are. Help newbies out when possible, and if someone is breaking a rule, keep in mind they may be unaware of the system. I was trying out a gym a few years back, and they only had 2 older model elliptical machines. I hopped on one when it became available, not noticing the notepad nearby. Turns out, it was policy to sign up for 30 minute blocks of time on the machine since they were so popular. I found this out after a very rude old man informed me that I was not on the list. Shortly after I nicknamed him "Precor Patrol" and didn't join that gym after my free trial!

Have any other gym experiences? What gets on your nerves about people at the gym?

    haha..these are so true

Another one please stop with the loud vocalization when you are lifting..I am glad that you finally put up that 135 but the rest of the gym doesnt need to hear about it. Also easy on the grunting..If its often enough to attract gorillas its to much

How many time are they going to put this same article up? I'm really tired of all the "10 pet peeves at the gym," "rules for proper gym etiquette," "5 things NOT to do at the gym." NEW ARTICLE PLEASE!

I hate it when a guy comes over to me and says, "hey, let show you how to do that." Ahhhhh! Did I ask you for help!? I used to have a personal trainer, I know what I'm doing!

How about those disgusting folks who feel that it's acceptable to hack up a lung and spit it on the floor in the shower? Hello?!! This is not YOUR home!! And yes, I'm talking about the WOMEN'S showers!

Also, in group classes, coming in late to an already crowded class and shoving your way into a too-small space, interfering with others already in a groove. If there isn't room to do a fully-extended kick in all 4 directions, find another workout or space!

People who shower in perfume/cologne before working out...

People who walk on the treadmill, slower than they would outside...

People who go to the gym to show off the latest fashion in gym shorts, as opposed to actually working out...

Annoying trainers that ask if you'd like to "sign up" everytime you walk through the door...

People who rest on the machines instead of letting other gym goers work in w/ them...

Fun list. If this article was posted recently I somehow missed it....

To those who are tired of these articles, no one's making you read them.

I don't like it when there is nothing around to wipe the machines with... No spray and paper towels... no moist towelettes... nothing... as far as other people are concerned... I really don't pay attention to them because I don't care.. but I wish that gyms (even the tiny ones in apartments for their tenants) would place things around to wipe down the handles and the seats...
