Your next diet's most important ingredient

(No, not willpower...but another kind of thinking.) Just saw an email that made me stop (before I hit the delete button as usual) and read the study, the blog, and then I thought: This one is worth keeping, even passing on. It's about why the Mediterranean diet appears to work, and what its most powerful ingredient may be: positive thinking!

In a study of diabetics, the group that was told to follow a Mediterranean diet lost more weight and needed fewer meds than those following a lowfat diet. But the truth is the nutritional factors between the eating plans weren't that different. Both groups were told to eat smart carbs and healthy fats. The difference was HOW they were asked to do it. Here is a quote from the blog by Monica Reinagel, M.S., posted on NutritionData.

Perhaps it was just a matter of what the dieters were told to focus on. The Mediterranean group was told what to eat: vegetables, fish, grains, olive oil. The lowfat group were told what to avoid: sugary snacks and high-fat foods. Could it be as simple as casting dietary recommendations in terms of positives instead of negatives?

This is what I believe. Tell me to eat more nuts, fruits and veggies, more whole grains and salads and foods I can grow, pick, hold and recognize (as opposed to processed and full of additives and preservatives), and I will eat healthier. Go toward a goal (what TO eat) and not away from one (what NOT to eat). The same is true in every thing I do: Positives speak louder than negatives. It's what I live by. It's what I think works and it's what I try to publish every month in SELF. So think positive, move toward a goal and you will reach it. Visualize success, whatever the goal and the task that will bring you close to it (eating right, running, taking care of yourself). It's the most positive thing you can do for your healthy self.

Studies on parenting strongly indicate that children respond better to positive instructions (or instructions that indicate what they should do, ex-we walk in the house) than negative instructions (or instructions that tell them what not to do, ex--no running in the house), even when the content of the instructions is the same. It makes since that we would continue to respond to these same kinds of instructions as adults. Not to mention that negative instrustructions are frequently punititive (even if they're not intended to be, they limit possiblities) and positive instructions can be rewarding.

I'm the healthiest and fittest that I have been in years by eliminating most processed foods from my diet. I have lost 20 pounds over the last 2 years by following a high fiber diet. I eat a lot of salmon, chicken, avocado, raw almonds and veggies. I also love a golden roasted flax seed blend that tastes delicious. It's called FitFlax http://www.fitflax.com It's a great source of omega-3s, and omega 6's which are essential to good health. Flax seeds are also high in fiber, protein, minerals, B vitamins and lignans. Most mornings, I have fitflax wih greek yogurt and berries. It's a filling delicious breakfast and the perfect way to start my day.

I was reading The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber (I think), about small businesses, but there's a part where he talks about life, and he said you need to take your life seriously - look at where you want to be, who you want to be and what you want to do. Write it down. I was inspired, so I wrote down what I wanted in my life, and the first thing I realised is that I actually want to be a non-smoker. The next day I stopped smoking (with some nicotine replacement therapy). You can't live healthily and positively for yourself and your family, unless you make conscious positive decisions. I cut out cigarettes quite easily because I made a conscious, positive decision. People try with the best intentions without knowing what they're doing - they're in the dark. Once you take control of your life, true miracles can happen easily!

Yes - negatives don't offer alternatives. Someone may not know what to do instead. Think of it this way: "If I can't do/eat that, what should/can I do/eat?" Especially with the food thing, there are a lot of people who haven't a shred of a clue about healthy choices.

CONSISTENCY and PERMANENT LIFESTYLE CHANGE and forget-the-word-DIET is a start. Eastern Euros eat this diet and that's why we are so saturated with plant fats (the god stuff). Couple the mediterranean foodstuffs with good cardio and some strength training for bone health and some yoga or stetching for stress and YOU GOT IT.
