New LeapFrog "Let's Go to School" DVD can help preschoolers "first day" fears (p.s. Dear LeapFrog, I love you.)
I'd like to take full credit for all of this but here's the thing: My kid learned the letter sounds from a DVD called "The Letter Factory" by LeapFrog. The main character, Tad, visits a letter factory where he learns letter names and sounds, and a catchy song that helps him remember the lesson. My son had only watched the DVD a few times, but it made a huge impact. And I've recommended this DVD to every single parent trying to get a preschooler excited about letters and reading. (Watching a DVD can't substitute for parental involvement, but a little help in the form of a cute animated character doesn't hurt.)
Clearly, I'm a big fan of LeapFrog DVDs. The company just released its fourth DVD -- the first one in four years -- to get young children kids get excited about school. It's called "Let's Go to School" (US$15) and helps calm an anxious Tad and his sister, Lily, from their back-to-school worries. The kids visit their school the day before class starts and they find that nearly every single item in their classroom, from the clock to the blocks and books, are also nervous about the new year. And as with every LeapFrog DVD, there are new songs and facts to learn.
If you have a preschooler that is nervous about the first day of school, consider letting him or her watch "Let's Go to School." And check out a clip from the movie, an exclusive to Yahoo! Shine.
Also, share your "I will never forget..." moments!

Report AbuseI will never forget my now 4 year old daughter's first day of school, I knew I was doing the right thing but I still had to park in the school parking lot because my tears would not let me see where I was going, stayed there for good 10 minutes, composed myself and drove home, the thing is, she waved good bye with a big smile and skipping and holding the teacher's hand disappeared into the building, she was happy to be a big girl and was not going to miss me as much as I was going to miss her, it made me happy to have raised such an independent little person but still felt the sting of not being missed. She still loves going to school and still skips into the building with a big smile but I don't feel so upset anymore.
