Parenting poll: Do you think kids should have homework over summer vacation?

Every other day, my son works on a few pages of summer math homework. We also have to keep a reading log, which tracks the seven books he's to read over about 12 weeks. Did I mention he's going into second grade?

Here's the thing: My kid loves math (for now) and he lists reading as one of his favorite things to do (for now). Summer homework isn't a battle for us unlike last year, where he spent the last two days of his summer break working on his math workbook and completing a journal. (I'd like to think he learned his lesson about procrastination.)

As a parent, I like that he has summer homework because it helps fosters a love of learning. The homework isn't intense; it's really a review of the past year, just to keep the academic juices flowing. The other benefit is that his homework routine doesn't get completely thrown, which makes it easier for all of us when school starts in late August.

But I'm sure many of you dread having to ask your kids to do their summer homework––either because they hate doing it or because you feel like homework shouldn't be assigned over the break.

According to the National Center for Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins University, most students lose about "two months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills" during their summer vacation. This "summer slide" is one reason why teachers spend so much time at the front end of the school year reviewing what their students learned the previous year.

So I'm curious: Do you think kids should have homework over their summer break? And if they don't have summer homework, do you find ways to insert educational activities into their days?

As a high school student- I HATE summer homework. I'm in a lot of advanced classes, so I'm pretty burned out by the years end. My summer schedule is busy enough without the homework that is added. I barely have time to breathe before school starts again at full force. Perhaps that's why so many of my peers are planning to take a year off after graduation just to rest. Without it, we're afraid that we'll be worn too thin to do well in college. Summer homework is okay to a point, but I'd rather it stayed on the lighter side.

I truely believe that summer should be a time for kids to relax and have fun. If we keep opushing kids we will have a bunch of psch hospital busting out of the doors

As a mother of four going into grades three, five, and seven I hate summer homework. We work so hard all year and need the time off in the summer. Me just as much as the kids.

Jesus. It seems like every year we take more and more leisure time away from kids. In the last fifty years, summer breaks have gotten shorter, school days have gotten longer, more homework per night has been added, and now they have homework during SUMMER? When are we going to just leave these kids alone to be kids? Just let them be, and let them have fun.

I, myself am a high school student. I always take the maximum amount of classes I'm allowed to take, with pretty much at least 4 or more AP classes. This year, for whatever reason, certain classes did not make clear what summer homework is (although there is... guaranteed... summer homework), and likewise just ONE summer assignment includes reading the bible to understand future allusions, defining terms, reading a few books, and more. That already sounds like it'd be enough for the whole summer by itself. Being burnt out from the school year before and being forced to go to work every weekday, there just isn't enough time and energy to attend to this homework. I've already had to cancel my vacation plans and try to push it back. -.-" Plus, procrastination these days make summer fun very appealing... it just seems even though I understand where teachers are coming from (from the POV), that students aren't supposed to have fun this summer or be able to do anything aside from study and work.

Its called summer break. I am sorry but they are kids. Let them have fun. That is what being a kid is about. Now a half to one full hour of reading and some workpages every other night doesn't sound bad at all to keep the juices flowing. But when "homework" begins interfering with your overall life, that is so wrong.

I never had summer homework and I am 28yrs old. The only students that had summer home work were the ones in ap classes. At the end of the summer my friends would would get together and read the books and help each other write the papers. I would read the books and help them write the papers. When kids are little and there parents stay home and they get help thats one thing, when the kids are in high school, they cheat together.

I think that Summer homework is appropriate. I do not suggest a lot of it, but I do think that routine is routine. It should lessen the dread of going back to school for some children because routine is routine. It may not work for all but for some children I really reccomend it. When we consider all that is happening around us in the world today learning is always appropriate. Please accept my apology to those students that are tired of doing homework now, but Summer use to be fun for all but now it turns out that there is more crime and other things happening now which restricts Summer fun. Live and learn...Learn how to live...Homework will help in both cases.

i can't believe i'll be the first to say that kids should have homework over the summer. i always grew up with summer reading lists and never thought anything of it. i actually would ask my aunt, who was a teacher, for workbooks for things to do. and *gasp*, i was always more ready than everyone else in the fall. a few pages of math worksheets every other day and a summer reading list to keep kids sharp is hardly stealing their childhood.
