Why do some parents oppose President Obama telling kids to take responsibility, study, and get an education?

After the White House released President Barack Obama’s address to school children, there remain schools that will not air the president’s educational pep talk because of pressure from parents who don’t like the president’s political positions.

Even if you are aghast at the vitriol spilling at public meetings about health care reform proposals, you can understand that many people are worried about what changes to our current health care system will mean  for those currently insured as we attempt to insure the 46 million Americans who have no coverage. But to oppose an address by the president to students about taking their studies seriously at the start of a school year--why? At best, it’s “silly,” as Education Secretary Arne Duncan put it. At worst, it’s downright frightening, uninformed, and terribly, unnecessarily alarmist and disrespectful.

Why disrespectful? Because Obama is not the first president to address school kids via the tube. Republican presidents Ronald Reagan did in 1981, George H.W. bush in 1991, and George W. Bush did in 2001. Bush senior focused solely on education, while Reagan slipped in a plug for low taxes and the line-item veto, and George W. mentioned the war against the Taliban in Afghanistan. Yet, there was no major outcry from the left about the presidents spreading “propaganda” across classrooms. Even Laura Bush, the oft-quiet former First Lady and a former teacher, says she is for the president giving this kind of speech to school children.

The principal of an elementary school in North Carolina was on CNN this morning, talking about how he decided to heed the cries of his students’ parents against airing the noon (ET) talk. I am sure hoping those same parents take the time to read the address (wishful thinking?) and make an informed opinion, not one based solely on personal political leanings. News reports have been filled with comments from people who don’t want the president to share his “socialist” and “communist” ways.

As a back-to-school assignment for all of us, especially those who love a Highlights Magazine Hidden Pictures kind of challenge, take a look at the address released by the White House over the Labor Day weekend to find just what it is people are so certain they will find.

When the president talks about himself, it’s about his journey as a student, from his time as a kid in Indonesia when his mom would wake him up before dawn to study what she knew he wasn’t learning in school to the times he admits he wasn’t always as focused as he should have been on his school work. It’s a back-to-school talk urging children of all ages to take personal responsibility for their own education. How can anyone argue with words like these?

“Every single one of you has something you’re good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That’s the opportunity an education can provide."

Or these, after he talks about his own second chances and opportunities:

"Some of you might not have those advantages. Maybe you don’t have adults in your life who give you the support that you need. Maybe someone in your family has lost their job, and there’s not enough money to go around. Maybe you live in a neighborhood where you don’t feel safe, or have friends who are pressuring you to do things you know aren’t right.

But at the end of the day, the circumstances of your life – what you look like, where you come from, how much money you have, what you’ve got going on at home – that’s no excuse for neglecting your homework or having a bad attitude. That’s no excuse for talking back to your teacher, or cutting class, or dropping out of school. That’s no excuse for not trying.”

It’s a personal speech about personal responsibility, the importance of staying in school and working hard to get an education. It’s filled with rich examples of real students and people who persevered against the odds. So, please, anyone who is dead set against their children listening to the president of the United States urge children to take responsibility for their school work, to study, to work hard, to develop skills and think about what they want to do one day, read the speech. And if you can find something in it you wouldn’t want your children to hear, do share.

Here's the video of his entire speech:

My grandson will be watching the speech. We will discuss what he was able to get from it when he arrives homes after school.

He has a family full of people that promote getting an education for him.

It is very simple. Hatred lacks common sense. The hatred of Obama is so great in this country, that he could say good morning and be accused of trying to brainwash someone. I can see it now. He said good morning and it is cloudy outside, he is trying to control my mind.

Lighten up people, let us worry and fake outrage over some real issues.

Thank you, Dory, for this well written article.

The nation cannot continue to cave to a vocal minority who have no interest the truth or even reality. These people, as you noted, continue to shout "communist" and "socialist", reminiscent of the ugliest era in our nation's history. The majority of those who throw around these words have no concept of what they're even shouting about. This hatred stems from ignorance, and they want their children to reflect their ignorance. They certainly have that right. However, they don't have the right to inflict their ignorance and hatred on the rest of the nation, especially the rest of the nation's children.

The manner in which these ultra conservatives continue to seek new ways to attack President Obama and those who support him has become frightening. It's become clear that they want our president to fail. This should be terrifying to all Americans, because it means these people want America to fail. This cannot be permitted to continue, and these people must be stopped.

Um... actually the Democrats during George Sr. administration ordered investigations according to the Washington Examiner... the only difference is the outcry is before Obama has spoke rather than after.

Most people (even Republicans, I am finding more and more) don't really give a care... and those that do are worried about the content... while a miniscule amount just don't like the messenger at all...

My kiddos will not be watching the speech because here in Texas they are so redneck they want to control all of their children's thoughts. They are afraid their children may have a thought of their own. They are afraid the president may inspire their child to be a better person.

They are afraid their children may decide not to drop out of school and make something of themselves, instead of working at McDonalds.

The fact these parents are acting so stupid is ridiculous. Go to the school watch the video with you kiddos. Have a discussion about it after. Ask them what they think about it. Ask them what their educational goals are. Teach them it is OK to have an opinion that differs from someone else, and to respect the others person's opinion.

Good gosh people talk to your kiddos!!!

Kim and Angela, I will concede that a lot of the disapproval of the president does come from hatred because of his race. But then I must wonder where was that hatred when they were voting why did that hatred not make a difference then as it is making a difference now? And I will concede that a lot of people DISAPPROVE of the president and his policies, the people he has around him. Then it would seem to me that we are having unity of the American people as pertaining to their DISAPPROVAL of the president whether it be for race or policy. And I am very proud to see unity in the people. For so long I feared we the people were just going along with whatever. This gives me hope for America, for the freedoms that we enjoy. Perhaps we the people have not lost the spirit that brought about freedom from the royals in England and freedom from slavery, and freedom from the Japanese, (Pearl Harbor) and then of course freedom from the holocaust for the Jewish people (Hitler's Germany). Nar lagai Dhia do lamh. This is Irish for may God not weaken your hand. May the America people continue in unity to protect and honor the military who have fought and died and are fighting and dieing, although they have one hand tied behind their back.
