Top 10 Favorite “Junk-Food”-Inspired Breakfasts for Kids

It’s hard enough to get out of bed in the morning without having to whip up some intimidating Martha Stewart masterpiece for the kids. Fueling your little ones for the day can be fun and easy with these “junk food” inspired breakfasts. We promise, they’re totally guilt free and kids (and adults) love ‘em!

  • Banana Splits. Slice a banana in half lengthwise, top it with vanilla yogurt (we like to use f-- e Total Classic Yogurt since there’s less sugar), then sprinkle on handfuls of healthy fixings like nuts, raisins and granola. You can even add a big red cherry for extra authenticity!
  • Pizza. English muffins topped with sliced turkey (without nitrates) or turkey bacon and melted Monterey Jack cheese make for tasty little morning pizzas with a great dose of protein. If your child likes tomatoes, dice one up and sprinkle on top along with a little grated Parmesan.
  • Cookies. The first time we ever heard the phrase "breakfast cookies" we screamed "sign us up!" The idea of a rich and chewy goodie to start of our morning is pretty irresistible and kids seem to agree.
  • BLT's. Toast wheat bread (or any wheat-free version) and pile on the turkey bacon, tomato, and avocado. You can also go the “roll-up” route by swapping the bread for a warm corn tortilla.
  • Milkshakes. Blend up any quick and healthy version you want. We love yogurt, soy or rice milk mixed with fruit and a little ice to thicken it up. You can also go dairy/milk free with fruit, a little apple juice and ice. Toss in some almonds for extra protein too. A great on-the-go breakfast for adults and kids alike.
  • Waffle-Wiches. Toast up two mini frozen waffles and fill with peanut or almond butter and sliced banana, or yogurt and fruit sandwiched in between. Easy for little hands to pick up -- and we love them because they take about two minutes to whip up.
  • Fries. A few sweet potato fries are guaranteed to liven up any morning. You can find them in the freezer section at most grocery stores. Serve them up with a scrambled egg and a few slices of turkey bacon.
  • Apple Pie A La Mode. Those little mouths will be watering! Warm a bowl of applesauce or saute some apple slices on the stovetop in a little butter until soft -- then top with vanilla yogurt, cinnamon, and a sprinkling of granola.
  • Cinnamon Treats. Kids find it hard to keep their hands off of cinnamon toast when it’s cut into playful shapes using cookie cutters. Slather butter onto the toast, then sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon and cut into flowers, stars, trucks, butterflies, etc -- suddenly it's less like breakfast and more like a treat! To make sure kids get their fill of protein, we like to serve the toast with a side of apple slices and peanut butter for dipping.
  • All You Can Eat Buffet. Design your own oatmeal "buffet" with an array of irresistible fixings so kids can mix up their own creation. Fill bowls with fresh sliced banana, warm fruit compote (heat up frozen blueberries on the stovetop), nuts, cinnamon, dried fruit pieces, milk, yogurt -- and let the munchkins go to town!

Sounds a bit complicated. Why not some boiled eggs, whole grain toast, peanut butter, and a piece of fruit?
