The 28 Books Kids Must Read

When I was little, I read a lot, but some books meant more to me than others. I grew up in the wilds of North Dakota, so for the most part my three siblings and I borrowed books from the library or the bookmobile, although our family occasionally made it to the bookstore in Fargo. I reread my favorites so many times that they are indelibly stamped on my memory. I can even remember where I was sitting or what I was wearing when I read some of them. Now that I have two kids of my own, I’m collecting new editions for them as I rebuild my childhood library.

Read on to see if your favorites made the list!

Madeline

by Ludwig Bemelmans (1939)
When I recently picked up this book for the first time in maybe 30 years, I discovered something shocking: I knew every detail of every picture by heart but had zero memory of the words, or the story about the 12 little girls who lived in "an old house in Paris that was covered by vines." It occurred to me that this must have been my favorite preschool book, from the time when I would "read" to myself by looking at the pictures. Revisiting it today also helps me understand why I had so many déjà vu moments the first time I went to Paris.

Or try: Eloise. I never read Kay Thompson's Eloise books when I was a kid, but my daughter cannot get enough of this free-spirited mess-maker who lives in New York City's Plaza Hotel. But beware: These books do fill a girl's head with mischievous ideas!

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is a book every child should read. Sometimes you have a bad day and that's life. It's a hard concept to grasp at a young age and for many at a much more advanced age... A definite must!

I loved Alexander and the NGVBD! Also loved Green Gables when I was older. My favorite book for the longest time was Shel Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk Ends--so many poems! So many weird pictures!

    These are all so great...

I have read most to my kids, and my daughter has read the entire "Little House" series.

I read a lot of these when I was a youngster too...

Loved Anne of Green Gables too, and Dr. Seuss, who can get any better?

To me there are way to many good children's books from my childhood to name. I've also come to love some newer ones with my daughter. One of my favorite parts of being a mom is getting to sit down on a rainy day and read books upon with my daughter. At times I have more fun reading children's books then anything else.
