Paper snowflakes

The easiest holiday craft. Ever. From preschoolers to your biggest kid, it's hard not to get involved in making snowflakes to tape to windows. But you could also suspend them from your ceilings with a little fishing line. FamilyFun.com offers up easy instructions using a hole punch, but we like using child-safe scissors. To glam the snowflakes up with a little sparkle, let the kids line the outer edges with glue and sprinkle on some silver glitter. For a eco-friendly version, please check out these newspaper snowflakes over at Maya Made.

I recently went to Target and found several (okay, maybe a little more than several) holiday decorations I thought would look really smart in my house. Just as the store's red bull's eye was zeroing in on my wallet and making me rationalize my purchases, the voice of reason chimed in and said, "For the love of pete, you don't need this stuff. Let the kids do their crafty thing to decorate the house." I walked out of that store feeling quite proud of myself because you know how hard it is to leave the Target without buying at least three things that absolutely were not on your shopping list. I was also pretty excited to tell my kids they could use glue and glitter and markers and yarn and so many other crafty ingredients, all in the name of holiday prep.

The kid's craft blogoshere is flowing with adorable, tasteful and easy DIY holiday décor projects for kids. So gather up your supplies (and you'll be surprised to see that you have some of this stuff on hand) and your kids, turn on the holiday tunes and get busy turning your house into a winter wonderland.

Plus, they will keep busy over that long vacation. I think even after Christmas, scraps can be saved and used right away for next year's decorations. Anything to occupy their time creatively. Check my new post today for another project that can be made with old Christmas cards, wrapping paper and the usual suspects we generally have lurking around the house...glue, scissors, ribbon, glitter, etc.

When my son was in preschool his class made the cutest ornaments. I know it was a combination of cinnamon and Elmer's glue, but I don't know how much of each. Anyway, they rolled it out like cookie dough and cut it into shapes and poked a hole for a hanger. When they dried they put glitter on them. My son is 15 and he made these when he was 3 and they still go on my tree every year. They used have a wondeful cinnamon smell but after 12 years it's faded quite a bit.

I'm an adult and I still make paper snowflakes. They actually made pretty decorations in windows and on presents.

I also have a cinnamon ornament by son made in kindergarten on my tree. He's 14 now and as the other person mentioned, it has lost its smell.

He also made an ornament out of puzzles pieces. A cardboard picture frame that was decorated with the puzzle pieces with a handwritten note in the center that says "I love you to pieces". This hangs on our tree every year as well.

I wish his elementary school teachers all would have done ornament crafts each year, they are nice momento.

these are some kind of cute. brings back memories. we used to make santa claus and mrs santa claus out of walnut halves, felt and cotton balls (for beard and hair). My mom (70 now) still has them, as well as my angel with paper napkin wings. I really love those pine cone angels.
