Babies/Toddlers: Good Night, Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann

Good Night, Gorilla is a children's classic board book. Even if you introduce your babies and toddlers to it, they'll continue reading it through preschool because they can't resist the sneaky shenanigans of the gorilla and his zoo posse. Don't forget to ask your little ones to spot the red balloon on every page. ($10, amazon.com)

I absolutely love giving (and receiving!) books as gifts for birthdays and the holidays. My bookworm self loves encouraging kids of all ages to read, especially when I can share some of my favorite childhood favorites with others. Another good reason books are awesome gifts? They help keep your spending down.

Check out the slide show of children's books -- from babies up to teenagers -- that your kids would devour over the holidays.

What kid's books would you add to the list?

I also love giving and getting books as gifts.

My son loves to read and some of his favorite gifts have been books.

He loved the Time Warp Trio series when he was 8 or 9 and Mercer Mayer's Little Critter books when he was little. Right now he's into the Atermis Fowl books. All of Roald Dahl's kids books, especially Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the Witches were favorites of both me and my son.

I actually had Richard Scarry's Cars and Trucks and Things that Go as a child and remember it being a favorite. My son recently read To Kill a Mockingbird for school and brought it home so I could read it. It is one of the best books I've read in years. Great list!!

I like to give pop-up books as gifts, too. I haven't met a kid, yet, who hasn't been fascinated by them,no matter what the subject!

..SkippyJohnJones is one of my favorites, too!

For the tweens, Erin Hunter's "Warriors" series books. There are three complete series and one that is still having books come out. For any boys or girls that love cats, or animals of any sort really, these books are wonderful. My 11-year-old received "Into the Wild" for Christmas last year and was immediately hooked. Since then she has read 14 of the 15 books she owns and is asking for more for Christmas this year. The illustrator, Wayne McLoughlin is a wonderful artist. I contacted him asking if he had for sale any prints from the cover art, and I got an immediate reply asking not only what my budget was, but also which of the covers and which cats are my daughter's favorites. They will have a nice 8 x 10 plaque available in several of the prints in time for the holidays, it seems. She will LOVE that!

These are great picks for books!

i only wish books werent almost 20 bucks each....that makes it difficult for parents who cannot afford books even harder for thier kids to get read, and not everyone has access to a library.

I love giving books to my grandchildren, I look for books at yard sales, friends, and the Library has a book sale once a month. I love to read to my grandchildren and they get to pick out the books that they want me to read to them. When we are done with the books we send them to our friends that have small children and they read them to their children. This is great then we all exchange the books.

If you're looking to buy Skippyjon Jones, look elsewhere. A difficult to read tongue twister with a storyline all over the place. I've read many, many books with my kids and this is by far my least favorite.

I'd recommend "Far Away Rainy Day Land" by Lyndie Chiou. Written by a friend and available on Amazon.com. Truly a great book for kids ages 1-6. My kid loves it!

My kids love Good Night, Gorilla. I also use flash cards from Galloping Minds for my daughter to teach her ABCs before going to bed. She loves the large beautiful images and loves to look at them. The thick cards have really pretty pictures. Availble on Amazon.com (Alphabet and Phonics Flash Cards from Galloping Minds)

The greatest gift exchanges require thoughtfulness, listening, and really understanding who another person is and what they like and need—that's what I always strive for in giving and it's the only thing I hope for in receiving.
