What Not to Wear to Your Company Party

Keep on your boss' sartorial good side with these five tips.

‘Tis the season for company holiday parties and, while they’re always a good excuse to buy a new outfit, let’s make sure you arrive on the right foot with some tips for what not to wear this year.

Anything that shows too much skin.
As much fun as company parties can be and as much as we want to dress up, never forget this is a work event. Dress accordingly. Feel free to get swanky, but remember, if it’s too short or too low-cut for a day at the office, it’s too revealing for your office shindig.

What Not to Wear

Uncomfortable shoes.
We love hot-looking heels as much as the next girl, but even if your office party will be featuring a sit-down dinner, you still need to walk around and mingle. Nothing says fashion victim like a woman hobbling on a pair of strappy sandals that are digging into her feet.

What Not to Wear

Inappropriate undergarments.
Visible bra straps and panty lines are a big faux pas anywhere you go, but they’re especially bad at an office party. If your dress requires a strapless bra, get one. If you’re not looking as smooth under your frock as you’d like, look into a pair of Spanx. It’s a festive night and you should arrive looking your absolute best, and that starts with a good underthings foundation.

What Not to Wear

Don’t pull a 180.
Your holiday party look should be you at your most put-together. If you’re a wild child who dresses conservatively at the office, don’t use your holiday party to showcase your tattoos and nose ring. Remember, you may be celebrating outside the office, but you’re still basically at work.

What Not to Wear

Save the ornaments for the tree.
Metallics and sequins and crazy bold jewelry might be big trends right now, but you don’t want to look like you belong hanging from the tree. Keeping things festive but understated is always best.

Remember, if you have to ask yourself, “Is this okay to wear,” chances are you already know the answer.

Yeah, I have been to work parties where people have shown up looking like they were going to the club...and then proceeded to drink like they were at the club. Not good ideas.

I'll put away my clear bra straps for the night and be sure to keep the goods covered.

But I really want to dress up like an ornament - all tinsel and glitter! :P My biggest problem is most holiday parties end up not being fancy enough. Everyone is too worried about being overdressed, so it's all fancy pants but no holiday dresses. There are too few excuses to dress up these days. I wish people would be more brave and rock the party dress!

I say wear what you want. It is one of the only times you can be around you co-workers and not dress by rules. Personally, at company parties, I am a cleavage barer.

Honestly, I'm lazy when it comes to dressing up for holiday and holiday parties. But my secret tip works every time: Wear something cute and black and add a silver or gold garland "boa." Viola! Instant life of the party.

Oh please in my work place you can pretty much wear what you want, we are a big company one of the top 100, and I have a lady here who wears mini skirts and heels everyday except for when it snows, no one cares, while you should be professional, sometimes people can be so judgemental, nothing wrong with a little cleavage or sexinesss, BUT, if you are dressed for the club then no, if you are gonna show cleavage put the suit jacket over, and the skirts shouldn't really be mini unless you wear something humble on top and with flats, but all out then ya, inappropriate" for the rules of society, if I had it, I would have women dressed sexy all the time, and I am a woman, it's been so long since I have shown cleavage, but over the summer I did it and felt like my old self again and felt so natural :)
