Tips from Bob Harper: Jump-Starting 2009

I am the luckiest Yahoo! staffer in the world.

The producers of NBC’s The Biggest Loser know I am a huge fan of the show, so they invited me to spend some private time with uber-trainer Bob Harper at the ranch last week.

Wowzah, he is something special!  After the sweat-fest, he shared a few tips on starting off 2009 on the right foot (so to speak):

Bob’s tips are super-duper logical and easy to incorporate into your life, but here they are in case you want to print them:

1)     Breakfast is critical, especially before you work out.

2)     Eat lots of small meals – every 4 hours is ideal;   you have to eat if you want to lose weight.

3)     Drink lots of water, it kicks your metabolism into gear.

4)     Be sure YOU are your own #1 priority.

If you’re like me, and you want MORE of Bob in your life, there are several options:

  • Bob’s book just came out in paperback.  I got it last spring in hardcover, it is chock-full of great tips…  I no longer eat bread in restaurants, and I always have a salad first when I eat out.

    You are soooo lucky! :)

My husband and I love Bob and watch The Biggest Loser faithfully. I wonder who will win this season. I hope there's not a bunch of drama like last season.

I have never seen the biggest loser. therefore I wonder if eating that many small meals, is not also a cover up for people to eat too many times a day? I myself have type 2 diabetes and what I have found (w/exercise) having a small amount of what knowing that is good for you....and that you enjoy it will benefit in the long run. I feel that walking an hour in the morning and possibly 1/2 hr in the early evening keeps me totally in my blood surgar range. Not to mention keeping a focus on your goal at all times Take care everyone Sandy

sfh_94401, eating many times a day does not mean eat many large meals many times a day. It is spacing out what you might eat (and in many cases less of what you normally eat) in three meals and spreading it over the course of 6 smaller meals in order to keep your blood sugar levels from spiking. I'm really glad to hear that you found a way that works for you, though. Great job and I wish you all the best!

I love anything to do with "The Biggest Loser"...I love watching their workouts and just wish I could be there too. I gotta get his book...and visit his site...Boy were you lucky to workout with him....I like both Bob and Jillian...although I thought that Jillian was tougher than any of them...and pushing yourself to your outer limits...know the feeling...it feels good after you do it!! Nice article and glad you got to the "finish line" with Bob's workout!! I think "The Biggest Loser" is the greatest show on TV!!

Wow, so luck to be able to work out with Bob for an hour! I'm sure he'd kill me too! Who knows if I'd be able to last for an hour. I certainly hope this season is also filled with less drauma. Eating small meals every few hours is exactly what I do. Now, I need to kick it into gear with working out! Gotta get motivated again! Love Bob & I think he's super HOT!!! Jillian is cool too, she'd probably kill me too!

WOW! I love that show and have my husband screen calls so that no one makes me miss the show. I have two bone spurs and hip problems that make is about impossible to work out or walk. I get very depress over my weight and wish I could be like you and everyone on that show. Bob is my fan on the show. It is not just working out but the mind over your body that is important too. Bob seems to stress that and helps you understand it. Good luck with your workouts and diet with Bob's help. Debbie

All of these comments are amazing -- thanks so much for taking the time to read the blog and reply. Many of you gave great tips -- walking for an hour in the morning is a great way to start the day!

Also -- for those of you who love Bob, he is just plain AWESOME. So please keep watching the show, and tell all of your friends to watch it, also.
