I'm lounging about in NYC (well, I'm on a business trip, speaking at a conference) and last night I got to meet a good blogging buddy who lives near Central Park. BL Ochman is one of the first bloggers I met online when I first started blogging five years ago. And, since then, she's become not only a great blogger buddy, but a great petblogger buddy.

When we went to BL Ochman's last night, we met Benny Bix. Benny is the most adorable Labradoodle and way bigger than I expected. He's funny, playful, and anyone who thinks dogs don't have distinct personalities, needs to meet Benny! He exudes personality!

I'm writing about Benny because he's such a big dog - with big thoughts (I think - when you look into his eyes you see the brain whirring and you get the feeling he's literally thinking of the next trick he can play on you!), and I didn't imagine him that size. I mean, this is NYC. He lives in an apartment!

Well, meeting Benny has changed my perspective of owning dogs. One would think a cat would be the better pet in an NY apartment, but Benny gets plenty of exercise in Central Park, and he loves BL with the deepest affection a dog can show an owner. So, the whole - big dogs need a big backyard - issue, is moot, here.

Interestingly, during the cab ride to see BL, I saw a number of people out walking dogs. One woman was happily strolling along 5th Avenue with a Greyhound. I was pretty surprised! Most of the other people had little dogs - I saw a Sheltie, and a small mixed breed, and a Schnauzer. None of them seemed to be at all worried about where they were. They were on a walk with Mom (and/or Dad) and they trotted along as if everything was exactly right with their world. Because, I guess it was.

Would you keep a big dog in an apartment? Do apartments rule out the love and affection of a Benny? I don't think so. But, what do you think?

Hi Yvonne, I have to say the pet will adapt to the life you have chosen for them! Hopefully, as a responsible owner, it is a good life! As a Doodle owner myself - I know all about the adorable personality they have! I have a Golden-Doodle and Daisy is as comical as a child! She loves to lay in rest at my feet, here at work or at home she finds things to get into! I think it depends on the type of person you are and what kind of dog you own. You can't contain a dog that has traits for hunting or working in a small space without giving that pet a place to do what they were bred to do!

Hi daniellep,I love cats, too. But, cats and dogs together make a great combo. I now believe, as long as you are committed to good exercise, you can have a dog in an apartment.

Staci, thanks for the good words. I can imagine how comical Daisy is - Benny was very funny! You make good points about being a good pet parent. Thanks for sharing. I love hearing from the readers. We all learn something from each other.

I most certainly would! I love animals. I have 2 cats and a chihuaha. I live in a large one bedroom apartment, that, unfortunately, has a weight limit...20 lbs! And that isn't per animal, that's total, they also have a 2 pet limit but the landlord doesn't mind my 3 pets, when we first moved in there was a lady renting 2 apartments, one just for her 30 foster cats! I would have much more loved to have taken home one of my dad's lab pups at the time I got my little Sunshine, but I couldn't. Don't get me wrong, I love my Sunny Bunny, but I would be a much happier person with a big dog! I'm a country girl that grew up with labs and hunting, and now I live in the middle of the city in an apartment with no yard...a big dog would be a touch of home...but alas, it isn't allowed! Any who! Yes I would keep a large dog in an apartment, my little one gets more than enough exercise so I know a big dog would be fine!
