User post: Help! My dog loves to eat out of the litter box!

We have two Boxers. Lucy, is about 4 months old, while Guiness, is an adult. Both of the LOVE to eat out of the litter box. Not only is this one of the grossest things ever, (next to eating their own vomit, of course. -shivers-) my boyfriend said that it's not safe. I couldn't really imagine how eating cat droppings would be safe.

Does anyone have any tips or ideas on ways to break this grotesque habit? Every idea helps!

I had the same problem. I bought one of the automatic litter box cleaners. End of problem. You can't be there every second to clean the box. Also, you might want to call your vet for suggestions. Hope this helps.

    Bug,

Thanks for the advice. The litter box cleaners are a bit costly for our Holiday budget. If I can't find anyother more affordable option, we're definately splurging for that.

    Thanks again!

put a little canned pumpkin in your cat food...it will taste good but when it comes out the other end.... and anxiety or stress can make one do tat.....if you punished your dog in doing tis...it may keep doing it trying to cover up the evidence....but the pumpkin works .! I know I don't type very well but being an O' fart from the 50's tis keyboard is as bout foreign to me as one of them ipods...good luck and ...

    Happy Thanksgiving!

    MadMilker,

Thank you for your advice. I've never heard of canned pumpkin working that way. Is it safe for the cats? I know at Halloween time, when I tried to carve the pumpkin that darn kitty wouldn't stop climbing inside. I don't doubt the smell is appealing after that fiasco!

Thanks again, and Happy Thanksgiving to you as well!

(Pst, no need to apologize about the typing! I appriciate all replies. Even the a bit harder to read ones.)

    :)

There's a powder that you can sprinkle over their food to make their poop taste bad. I know how it sounds but it's true.

The powder is called Forbid. You should be able to get it through your veterinarian. I actually am a Vet Tech and I have the same problem with my dog! I have tried the Forbid with my cats (I have 4) but I couldn't get them to eat it when I put it over the food (I even tried their favorite soft food). I have never heard of pumpkin but it may be worth a shot! The only real danger to the whole thing is intestinal parasites that are transmitted via feces so make sure that your cat and dog are dewormed regularly (if they are both on heartworm preventative, you should be covered on the internal ones as well, depending on what you use). As gross as it is, just know that you are not alone! I get met at the door by a big golden retriever with a ring of cat litter around her nose almost every day! Good luck!

Our pooches are "cat cookie" eaters too. The vet says it's incredibly normal because cat poop is very protein rich. GAG!

Anyway, we switched to a top entry litter box called "Clever Cat". They can't get to the poop anymore and Oscar J. Cat likes the privacy.
