Action plan for when your flight is canceled

Traveling is stressful. Most plans will go off without a hitch, but there's always a few who get the short end of the travel stick when their flights are canceled. Weather, mechanical problems, and shortage of crew are a few reasons why flights might be delayed or canceled altogether. The Associated Press prepared a tip sheet with what you can do if your flight is canceled. Familiarize yourself with the action plan before you leave for the airport.

  • "Try to be rebooked. Some major airlines have interline agreements that allow them to easily rebook a passenger on another carrier." This option wouldn't lead to additional costs on your end.
  • "Request a refund. Most airlines will refund the amount you paid for a ticket if they cancel your flight and can't accommodate you on another flight that gets you to your destination on the day you were expecting." If you take the refund route, the AP warns that the walk-up fare for purchasing a ticket from another airline may be much higher than your original ticket.
  • "Ask for a hotel room. American Airlines says that if a delay or cancellation was caused by events within its control and it does not get a passenger to his or her final destination on the expected arrival day, it will provide "reasonable" overnight accommodations, subject to availability."
  • To avoid any surprises when you arrive at the airport, "make sure your airline has your email address or telephone number so it can alert you in the event that it cancels or reschedules your flight."
  • "Try to negotiate." The airlines' eagerness to keep customers might play to your advantage.

Eh... I am too laid back to care... I had one flight that was cancelled for mechanical issues and the carrier rebooked me on another carrier without me even asking or knowing... And then another one was so delayed because of weather that I would have missed my connecting flight and would have had to spend the night in O'Hare well they rebooked me for the first flight the next morning... I know I am going to get to my destination eventually and I don't chew out the flight attendants or the ticket counter staff and I feel like it goes a lot smoother. Crap happens... and as long as they don't lose my luggage I really could care less... Now my husband on the other hand is a different story.

These are great TIPS. You would be surprised how many people lose it when they travel. Its like they go crazy and turn into animals. In this day and age with so many people traveling, we pretty much have to expect something going wrong, so being hopeful, curtious and patient is very important when you travel.

These tips are great. Another is don't yell at the agent. One time when my flight was cancelled, after 4 people in front of me screamed at the guy, I just walked up, smiled and asked if he could make me happy. He up graded me and my partner to 1st class coming and going, gave us passes to the VIP club and a taxi voucher for our destination!

recently had the most horrible experience of my life with stupid airlines. Now you have to keep in mind that I have not flown in 20 yrs, since I was a kid, and the grownups for the group handled any problems. I was also traveling with my 3yr old daughter. ON what would have been two flights, a short one, then an 8hr one.

US. AIR, was horrible. It was supposed to be Detroit to Philly, Then Philly to Milan Italy. We were on the plane for Philly, on the tarmac, then they brought us back and got us off. Saying it was cancelled. WHat the hell? This was after an already 1.5 hr delay. So now I would miss my connection. SO they rebooked us on another airline, So i had to go out and down to baggage claim, then to the other airline. Who proceeded to tell me they have no openings, and i can wait until tomorrow. Hella no. So I have to haul, my 3yr old, and 3large luggage, BACK to the opposite end of terminal, then get rebooked again by US AIR, onto northwest, by this time it was 5min before departure. I was freaking out. Barley made it, and this flight was not to Philly, It was to FREAKING GERMANY. Then we get to Germany, um hello? there was a reason my husband had us transferring in the states, not germany. Anyway, I did not even have time to pee, get thru security again. and get to yet another airline. We had to run. literally RUN, from one end and level, to another. I was about to pass out. ANyone run with a heavy 3yr old, who is tired crabby, and literally starving hungry? (she slept thru the meal,And isntead of letting it wait, they took it) THen we get to, milan, By then I had no money in my pocket, and no way to call my husband. It was almost 6 hrs after our original arrival time. Thank the gods my hubby stayed at the airport the whole 6hrs, waiting for us.

Never again will I do this, and Deal with US AIR. But the advice here in this article does not cover all the things that really happen. I had just enough money for food, my cell phone was not working, I had no experience with airlines, and was traveling with a small child. Did not speak German, do not Speak Italian either.

My advice is CRY, because thats what got me on a new plane. even if it went to Germany. And dont let the airline people push you around. They were absolutly horrid to me. It was like I was inconveniencing them just by being there. UM HELLO, you took our money, and a LOT of it. I expect to be on a damn plane at the right place at the right time.
